I have to agree with RAZORBACK above and say that I would have preferred to see this in 2D, the 3D offered a little depth to the picture but that was about it and some scenes, for example when the giants were looking down on the humans in the castle the picture didn't look quite right.

I think its an enjoyable film to watch with older kids 8+, bit gruesome in places and quite possibly scary for younger kids, it put me in mind of The Sorcerers Apprentice from a few years back.

Kids absolutely loved it though, son was on the edge of his seat towards the end and they both thought the Giant Chef was gross but very funny. From them 8/10, from me 6/10.

Just got back from the screening, I thought it was pretty enjoyable although it wasn't quite as good as I'd hoped it would be (it had a decent cast but I thought Nicholas Hoult was a bit bland in the lead role).

Effects wise, the animated sequence at the start reminded me of the animated sequence at the beginning of Hellboy II but it wasn't nearly as good but the giants were very well done indeed and were easily the best thing about this flick. I also thought that the 3D added very little to the visuals so would have much preferred to have seen the 2D version.

But despite the above criticisms, I still thought it was a positive viewing experience so 'Jack The Giant Slayer' gets a satisfactory 6/10 from me...

I agree .. the 3D added little to the film for me. The first 20 or so mins, the 3D wasn't bad, but like lots of films it trailed off after then.

Not a bad film, but I expected more after seeing the trailer, so was a little disappointed. Pleasant film to watch on a Sunday morning, as it required little thinking, and was easy to follow. Think it would work well for teenagers, as it is quite gruesome in places.

Actually I never thought of it like that. I guess when I think 3D, I always expect things to fly out of the screen, but in this film, the way it is used is more subtle and hence why its not as noticeable. I think it would be interesting to see it in 2D just to see what the difference is ...

I quite enjoyed it, nice storytelling and very enjoyable for a Sunday morning movie :) although the 3D wasn't magical at all It still added that sprinkle to the eyes, so I think this movie will be great for children ^.^

I just think that they didn't make any real effort to play to it's strengths, there wasn't much added in the way of depth & there were very few occasions when objects popped out of the screen. Added to that it was also difficult at times to see clearly what was happening during dimly lit sequences.

It really seemed to be one of those films where the only benefit of it being shown in 3D was to enable cinemas to charge people extra...

Loved this! Was great fun for a sunday morning, unfortunately it was one of those films where the 3D does bugger all except give you a headache!
Loved Ewan McGregor the most, and enjoyed his little sayings, "Tally ho!", "You're barking up the wrong beanstalk!" and not forgetting the extremely familiar " I have an awfully bad feeling about this chaps!"
Bill Nighy made a great evil giant, his rough voice always seems to suit those sort of characters, the giants were interesting and it was good to see quite a bit of them(thought they'd skip around showing them too much)

Enjoyed Hoult, though the king and princess didn't have much substance unfortunately, liked the quirky ending :) open for another? a modern day giant film wouldn't have the same affect I'd expect!

I really enjoyed Jack and The Beanstalks (because there were several!) this morning courtesy of MrsMcG. I thought Nicolas Hoult played the lead competantly as Jack, although to me he always looks like the wee boy with the funny haircut (About A Boy) even when he's a teeneager in Skins or a zombie in Warm Bodies. I agree about the costumes in this too - there were points where Jack looked to be wearing almost a hoodie and jeans (like he does in Skins, Warm Bodies...) I wonder if he just forgot to change into his costume and no-one noticed!
Like Mrs Beate (didn't she write a cook-book or something?) I never notice Ewan McG was Ewan McG until over half way through. I was thinking along the lines of Kenneth Brannagh too, only not quite. Lovejoy made a good king though. I did however spend the whole movie trying to spot James McAvoy - was he a soldier? a giant? until I finally realised he wasn't even in it at all!
What was with the Ian Paisley sound-a-like giants though? Their strong Northern Irish accents really bothered me as being somewhat out of place.

Was it just me or did anyone else think that the giants at the begining were huge - towering over the little people, but towards the end in the castle they were only slightly larger, and indeed fitted through doors etc. in the castle.

Good clean family fun, with plenty of snot and fart jokes to keep me amused! The grotesque giants could cause nightmares in some of the younger children I would imagine though.

My score on the door is.............8/10.

Saw this at Vue Islington thanks to Cinefila1 last night. Nice to bump into Livi92 and Greece this morning.

I really had low expectations but was pleasantly surprised that I really enjoyed it. It's an entertaining re-imagining of a fairy tale. Hence it is not going to be too gruesome or graphic, no real foul language, a little romance and plenty of action.

On all these fronts it has fulfilled it's remit. Like others have said the 3D did not really had to the film. Personally I don't enjoy 3d films as generally they are quite dark especially the first 15 mins of this film.

It was an entertaining and undemanding film.

Looks like I am in the minority as I thought there were a few occasions with quite clever use of 3D, such as when Jack is hiding underwater in the lake.

I went to see this again as I thought may have been too harsh with my score but I think 6.5/10 is right. It is silly fun but not a romping adventure among the likes of Pirates of the Caribbean which I think it imitates in some regards.

Ewan's hair was so distracting!
