Many thanks to valda and colleague for the tickets to the UK premiere of Populaire at Curzon Soho last Thursday, with Q&A with the actors and director afterwards.
What a lovely exquisite film (as one of the attendees said during the Q&A), and I quite agree, a bit like a cross between Down with Love and Mad Men. I can relate to the topic as well, being a secretary many moons ago, I was a very fast touch typist typing legal documents!
After the entertaining and funny Q&A we chatted with the lead actors, Romain Duris and Déborah François, and had our photos taken with them, as one does!

I thought the opening Gala at the Glasgow Film Festival in February was the UK Premiere?

I don't know about that one, but that is what it says on my ticket.

This was everything and more. An extremely lovely, heartwarming, a touch old-fashioned film that will bring sunshine into your heart and make you cheer out loud at the end. I don't care what it is, tough-guy sports or speed-typing - let the underdog win and you'll make my day. In actual fact, I pumped a fist in the air! Laughed out loud a couple of times too. I could do that and not disturb anyone, as the lovely and warm screen 2 at Greenwich Picturehouse only had about 10 people in it, us included, and that on cheap ticket Monday. We had the whole back row to ourselves! Haven't had a comfier screening in ages and Populaire was very popular with OH and myself. If you still have a voucher, be sure to catch this as it might not stay long (it's French with subtitles, mon dieu!).
Btw, the Greenwich PH are giving away Stella Artois glasses (Sorry - it's not a glass, it's a Chalice) at the till. They had 3 when we saw them - 2 are still left if anyone fancies them.

P.S. I typed this really fast!

I thought this was delightful. Witty, charming and rather sweet. The leads had excellent chemistry and great performances from Duris and François. Minor criticism in that it was too long IMO and the third act felt a bit drawn-out. A real gem of a film. 8.5/10.

The story was ever so predictable but that was okay because the film was incredibly charming (as were the two leads, Romain Duris looked like a classic movie star!) and makes the 50s look like an utter delight with its pretty dresses and wonderful music. It's basically Mad Men meets Little Miss Sunshine and it's perfect Saturday afternoon viewing.

I am glad you all enjoyed it as much as I did! The two leads were even lovelier in real life, and Romain seems quite shy in the Q&A and when I approached him afterwards!

This movie really calls for the use of "lovely" to describe it. I don't care that it was clear from the start how it would end, it was still one of the more charming movies I've seen in a long time. It was great to see a story with a heart and charm of the "old days". And I admit, Romain Duris - swoon!
