Fab! McAvoy was repulsively good as Bruce! 9/10 Completely unpolitically correct which was refreshing as I thought they might have tamed him down.

Still not sure how to review this film. Parts were darkly funny and there were moments of brilliance but the story felt aimless at times and was unnecessarily crude in parts. James McAvoy's performance is exceptional but I definitely would not want to watch this again. 7/10.

Don't know what to think of Filth.

I enjoyed the first half where the film in amongst the madness had some funny and touching moments. However for some reason it lost a bit for me when McAvoys character descended into full blown madness.Picked up at the end and unlike some recent movies the ending was done really well. The movie played a bit like a 3 act play. McAvoys build up to madness, his actual madness and the final consequences of it.I have to agree with most people that McAvoy was great.

Wonder how many people in the audience would actually know who David Soul is ?

that said, no idea why he was in this film.

another question...I read the book over 10 yrs ago, but cannot remember the significance of the dead boy child who keeps popping up....

anyone know ?

I missed it in the film but seemingly in McAvoys Characters room there was a David Soul CD,so presume that Soul was in it because of McAvoys connection to him.Wonder if anyone else noticed and can confirm.

Agree that McAvoy deserves a big pat on the back and the movie didnt hold back but anyone who has read the books knows it is a complete mind f**k! Yes, it did fall in parts but it McAvoy and some of the other cast. You have this movie which is very dark and you cant even compare to Sunshine on Leith! Shows that films in Scotland can survive as long as we can produce movies of this quality. I really enjoyed it although seeing "Bunty" and thinking she was Spuds girlfriend in Trainspotting and she was in Harry Potter was the part that freaked me out the most!

I haven't read the book but I think
the child was his brother whose untimely death was surely one of the reasons McAvoy's character was so tormented (in addition to his bipolarity and overall nastiness). I can't remember it being explained in black and white but I believe the resuscitation scene suggests that he might have been responsible for the death.
You do see a David Soul CD. It's at the front of a small stack by a photo of Bruce's wife and child.
