Thank you for these suggestions, Bevvy; I think we might be very happy to combine a trip to Maastricht and Valkenberg. We've never been to a Dutch Xmas market, either, so that would be something new, too. I am not actually averse to a coach trip, though I don't think OH would wear it, but I'm sure we could go by train instead, and it's certainly nearer than some of the places we have visited, which would suit me!

Prague at Christmas time and in the winter is fabulous, loads of little markets. The architecture is fabulous, the cellar bars. Loads of things to see. This has to be my 2nd best place in the world (no 1 being New Orleans) .... A Hot Chocolate in one of the outdoor heated patio areas in the Old Town Square is a must, along with a walk along St Charles Bridge (supposedly the most romantic bridge in the world..seen lots of weddings here).

Prague would be lovely, as would lots of other places we'd have to fly to, but I think for a long weekend by train it would involve too much time travelling and too little at the destination. Mind you, it was so damn cold in Strasbourg last year (yes, even with regular hot chocolate intake!) that perhaps I should have a rethink...

Has anyone ever done a Christmas cruise somewhere and was it worth it? Either along the Rhine in Germany or somewhere nice and warm (and probably not affordable). Running out of ideas for this year's winter vacation. Or should I just go to Bruges?

I haven't done a cruise anywhere as I would get too twitchy, but Bruges is always lovely and no doubt extra special around Xmas. It can get very cold there, too, though - the damp from all those canals really seems to seep into your bones - so I would counsel wrapping up warmly and not spending too long outdoors.

Did Bruges in June and it's beautiful, I guess it's magical at Christmas. Brussels is only an hour away on the train from Bruges so depending on how long you're going for you could combine the two. I love city breaks so I am biased!

I agree they are both worth visiting but I have absolutely done Bruges to death and will need to wait several more years before going back and Brussels is a bit big for me. I like smaller cities or towns from which you can escape to the countryside if you get claustrophobic. Lubeck, for instance.

DD wants to go skiing for our December hols. I normally like a week of sun and this has always been the way...can't imagine leaving somewhere cold for somewhere even colder. How can I convince a 8.5yr old that mummy knows best! lol
