Interesting/fun links

#1 Post by canadian_turtle » Mon Jul 11, 2011 2:19 pm

I always love reading interesting/fun random things and to not go completely off-topic somewhere else I thought it might be a nice idea to have a topic dedicated to this :D

I was just reading how someone found pictures of the building of the Tower Bridge that haven't been seen online before:

1st set of photos: http://exploringwestminster.blogspot.co ... under.html

2nd set: http://exploringwestminster.blogspot.co ... ridge.html

It's astonishing to think that these were found in a skip and almost lost forever!

Thanks for the above - amazing. I only knew 3/4: Karl Marx's grave (used to be my hero), the Guildhall Ampitheatre, Wilton's Music Hall (I've been to poetry readings there) and I know the Wimbledon Windmill but didn't know it had museum. I'd really like to show off to visitors by taking them to the cockney cash machines. Does anyone know if there is one in central or west London?

I did some Googling and found these (source is from 2009 though so not sure if it's still accurate):

- Murco Service Station, Hatch Lane, Chingford, London, E4 6LP
- 447 Roman Road, London, E3 5LX
- 73 Commercial Street, London, E1 6BD
- 24 High Street, Walthamstow, London E17 7LD
- 197 Mays Lane, Barnet, EN5 2DY

Number 3 -- Phoenix Gardens is located just behind Odeon Covent Garden. We often go there before the cinema. And Wilton's Music Hall is terrific -- only recently discovered this gem. Great place to take tourists as it has a lovely pub and courtyard entrance too.

Wilton's Music Hall is well worth a visit. I went there for a comedy night via SFF.
Eltham Palace is a very interesting mix of Art Deco and Medieval. Entry is free with a National Art pass
so I will probably be revisiting there before my trial membership expires.
