Re: One Day
I went to see this today with a Vue ticket due to run out on Wednesday. I hadnt read the book so didnt know what to expect except what I had read on here. I enjoyed it, tried not to concentrate on the accent of Anne Hathaway too much. Pictures was quite empty dont think I have every been on a sunday afternoon before, a few funny bits and some sad bits but on the whole an enjoyable film. First time I think I have seen Jim Stugess in a film. Was surprised to see James Laurenson, not seen him for years, I remember him from Boney in the early 70's I used to stay up late to watch this. I was stuck between 2 films to watch but think that I picked the right one for me. Only downside was the film ran late and I got stuck in the football traffic.

Re: One Day
Went to see this last night at the Dominion with one of my itison vouchers.
I was disappionted, but not by Anne Hathaway's accent just by the film in general, it was just too slow and I just didn't feel the charachters were developed or given a proper background. It just kind of started and it just kind of stopped. Maybe this is how the book is, I've not read it?
Everyone here in Edinburgh is going a bit gooey over the film and I do admit Edinburgh does look lovely in all the scenes it appears in at teh start and the end.
I was just left disappointed. It just didn't do anything for me, beautifully staged and filmed though it was, I just didn't feel the charachters, or perhaps more importantly feel for them.
5/10 from me.

Re: One Day
We saw this too today with some free Picturehouse vouchers. What can I say, there was nothing on telly, and if I can't have 5 films a week in my week off, when can I? The 6.25pm screening was very well attended and we had to sit apart to get good seats in the upper bit (Picturehouse screenings are ususally seated). You have to wonder about some people though - they came in with whole bottles of wine from the bar and made the whole row stink of booze!
The film - a bit disappointed. Beautifully shot, I love Jim Sturgess, and Ms Hathaway's accent didn't bother me in the slightest, in fact, if there hadn't been a broohaha about it, I wouldn't even have noticed. But as alythonian remarked, there wasn't a proper character development for me. I know it's hard to pack 20 years in 112 minutes but it just felt wrong that it was always the same day and you just didn't get to see some important things happen - they were only ever mentioned in half-sentences.
When Emma says "Whatever happens tomorrow, we will always have today" - that's so true, but I was annoyed that they wasted so many precious days! That scene at the end was meant to console you about wasted opportunities, but it just did the opposite for me. They should have grabbed it there and then, head on. Instead they faffed about for decades. What muppets.
Should I read the book now or will that only make me more annoyed?

Re: One Day
Agree with other posters that Hathaway's accent fades in and out. But this is the kind of movie that the viewers know exactly what they're signing up for. If you loved the Notebook, you'll like this one.

It's the same in the book, though there's of course more space to elaborate on what happened during the other days in the year (I can't compare the amount to the movie though as I haven't seen it yet).

Re: One Day
In the book, even if nothing specific happens on particular year, you still get a sense of what the characters are up to.
In the film, there is one year that is a reduced to a 2 second clip of Emma swimming. How is that meant to show any character development?
I just think the concept of catching up on their lives on the same day each year works better on the page as the film feels like it is trying to rush through the years that don't have any significant events.
