I think half of the problem for me is that I can’t stand Gerard Butler. I don’t think he is a very good actor and he has ruined many a rom-com for me, talking out of the side of his mouth. He also plays such an unlikeable character, as a criminal and when he is helping African kids. He just goes around being angry at others, his family, his friends for not giving enough money, his bank manager for refusing him another loan – I am not surprised as he doesn’t seem to bring in any money working anymore, all we see him do is preach in his church and build one in Africa – because that’s what starving children really need, another church. Has this guy never heard of charities? Why didn’t he found one and got money in that way? So many people do, a bit of publicity (without shouting at people) and he might have got the money for his jeep. Also, I can sort of understand that if you see African children being murdered, your daughter’s need for a limo for prom night must seem kind of insignificant and wasteful, but she is an American teenager, and that’s what they do, you can’t really have a go at her for that. No wonder she thought he loved those children more than he loved her. So he goes around ranting at everybody, alienating himself from his family so much that it was necessary to tell us at the end that he is still with his wife, and we are supposed to find him heroic. Epic failure on my part.
