I'm a Leeds United boy through and through. I had the pleasure of meeting Gary Speed on two occasions - once actually playing with him in a charity football match. What a thoroughly likeable bloke. He's everything a modern day footballer should be. You look at the current crop of players, and they are generally a selfish bunch. They don't really have any time for their fans. You could never say that about Speed. I recall having a conversation with him when I was about 17 about the plight of Leeds into the abyss of League One football. I couldn't believe he was actually talking to me, Average Joe, in such depth about where it had all gone wrong for Leeds United. I can't think of many other footballers who would have given me that time. I'm deeply grateful for that, I always will be. It's a big deal when a famous person speaks to you and makes you feel so at ease. I'm pretty distraught about it all. I'm saddened it came to this. I'm saddened he felt he had no alternative. But if one good thing comes from this, perhaps now people will begin to take depression seriously in professional sport. It's a case in point that being rich, having good looks, a lovely family, and being beloved the world over isn't a recipe for happiness. I just want to hug him right about now. My thoughts are with his wife, two boys and his father who absolutely worshipped the ground he walked on. A true Leeds United legend, a true footballing hero gone but never, ever, ever forgotten.

He has touched the heart of many people.
