Fanzines Saturday, 3 March 2012 from 16:00 to 17:00 (GMT) Manchester: Free tickets
Manchester District Music Archive, in association with Manchester Histories Festival, will be hosting a panel discussing the history and legacy and Manchester’s alternative music publications.
The panel will be chaired by Dave (‘Debris’) Haslam. On the panel will be Mike Don from Mole Express (legendary local underground paper with its heyday in the early 1970s), plus Liz Naylor’ (of post-punk City Fun fame), Bob Dickinson (a contributor to the likes of New Manchester Review, and City Fun), and Dan Russell (from the contemporary fanzine Things Happen).
Expect the panellists to recount tales of Manchester’s music scene; to celebrate fanzines and analyse their relationship to the music scene, to the political underground, and to other independent and/or marginalised cultural activity in past eras; and to discuss the significance of fanzines and other self-published/alternative publications in an era of blogs, digital technology and social media.

2 'free' (£84) Alton Towers tix with £3.50ish total spend
Newspaper-based token collect
What: 2x free tix to Alton Towers
Get by: Sun 11 Mar 2012
How:
Step 1:
Collect nine different tokens from The Sun every day between Sat 3 Mar and Sun 18 Mar, (one token printed Mon - Sat, two in Sunday's Sun). The last date you can start collecting is Sun 11 Mar to get the offer.
It's a £2.50 spend if you b*y 5 x 30p weekday papers and 2 x 50p Sunday papers which include two tokens, plus 2x 46p for first class stamps.
So your total spend should be £3.42. As adult tickets are £42 each on the day (£33.60 for kids), this could save you about £80.
The tokens must be from different days; you won't be able to pick up five tokens from the same day's paper.
Step 2: You then need to choose five out of 11 date bands below spanning from 28 Mar - 1 Nov 2012. You can’t request a specific date so you need to be flexible.

The tickets will be valid for one day from one of your chosen date bands where possible, valid for the allocated date only. You'll be contacted with an alternative if your dates are unavailable.
Step 3: Once you’ve got the tokens, complete the application form, available in the paper and online from Wed 7 Mar 2012. The applications must be received by Thu 22 Mar 2012. Send your application and tokens to the address given, plus an SAE of at least 15 x 8cm with a first class stamp attached. HAVANA SANTIAGO TOUCHES DOWN IN EAST LONDON
http://www.richmix.org.uk/whats-on/fest ... -santiago/
From 2 - 4 March, people will be invited to a Havana inspired cultural takeover at East London’s Rich Mix.
Havana Santiago is a modern day remix of Cuban culture showcased in a contemporary East London setting; offering a fresh, compelling and unique insight into the country’s cultural heritage. It is also a celebration and culmination of many of the gifted creatives who have worked with Havana Club over the years to continue to educate and inspire the UK audience.
The three day long exhibition has been carefully curated by Boiler Room’s very own Thristian bPm and will feature a host of extra special guests including Charlie Dark, who will be on hand to host the weekend proceedings. The takeover will include photography, films, Afro Latin inspired music and a Cuba inspired street market.
The inspiration for Havana Santiago, started early last year when photographer Pia Ebrill and Thristian boarded a flight to Cuba to capture the colour, sights, sounds, people and the music of Havana. Over 14 days, Pia and Thristian travelled 1,720 miles from Havana right across to Santiago de Cuba gathering photos, sounds and inspiration to bring back to London. The reportage style shots were taken using a small point- and- shoot a camera instead of a 35mm SLR; creating shots evocative of film stills and consequently a more unique glimpse into a world which has been documented by so many.
FRIDAY 2 MAR / 6PM - 11PM
Guest list only: Please rsvp sarah@teaandcakepr.com to attend
Facebook event:
The three day programme will kick off with a VIP preview night on the Friday, where guests will be invited to enjoy classic Cuban cocktails and take an exclusive peek at the photography, followed by a screening of legendary Cuban film, ‘I am Cuba’, a 1964 Soviet-Cuban film directed by Mikhail Kalatozov. The film will be accompanied by a live DJ score created by The Shining; featuring A-Cyde and Hyperdub’s Morgan Zarate. The collective, signed to the Young Turks record label, will re-work the film’s soundtrack.
SAT 3 MAR / 8PM - 1AM / FREE
Facebook event:
On Saturday 3rd March, the Rich Mix will be given a rumba makeover, where special guests will dig out their rarest Afro Latin influenced records from deep within their crates, for one night only, to create an unforgettable global roots style house party. A selection of freestyle sounds will be spun by some of the country’s finest DJs led by Thristian bPm, supported by Charlie Dark (Blacktronica) and including guests from the Brownswood label, NTS Live Vince Vella and Mr Bongo, making this a night not to be missed. The music will be an inspired mix of afro latin and electronic drum rhythms.
SUN 4 MAR / 12PM - 8PM / FREE
Facebook event:
Finally, to wrap up things on the Sunday, a street style market will take place in the main foyer, providing Londoners with the sights, sounds and tastes of Cuba. Stall holders will include Brownswood, Cuba Connect, the infamous Churros guys and Mr Bongo’s selling some of his rarest world cinema and music releases.
In addition there will be Cuba inspired food and drink. Soundscapes and field recordings captured by Thristian on his MP3 recorder will provide an audio narrative as guests wander from stall to stall, for their very own Havana Santiago souvenir. Gilles Peterson will be playing an afro latin jazz set for the event, whilst Charlie Dark will perform a poetry piece specifically created. To support the whole experience, some of the best mixologists in London will create authentic Cuban cocktails such as the Genuine Cuban Mojito.
