Hip-hop duo Rizzle Kicks headline free Olympic Torch show in Portsmouth

CHART-toppers Rizzle Kicks will lead the celebrations when the Olympic Torch comes to Portsmouth.

The hip-hop duo will perform on a huge stage set up on Southsea Common as part of a free show sponsored by Coca-Cola.

They will headline a two-hour evening event on July 15, which will feature national and local singers, dancers, entertainers and sports people.

The party will take place because Portsmouth has been chosen as an overnight stopping point for the torch when it arrives in the city from Jersey, before leaving for Brighton via Petersfield and Chichester the following day.

Portsmouth City Council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure and sport, Cllr Lee Hunt, said: ‘It’s going to be sizzling summer of Olympic amazement!

‘The whole celebration will really get the city into the Olympic spirit and even if you’re not into sport there will be music and culture and so much more to give everybody a chance to get involved.’

The party will be one of 61 events along the course of the Olympic torch relay, which will feature other up-and-coming bands and climaxes in a concert in London’s Hyde Park on July 27.

This will also include performances from Emeli Sandé, General Fiasco, Katy B, Kids In Glass Houses, Labrinth, Little Comets, Loick Essien, Morning Parade, Tribes, Wombats, Wretch 32 and Young Guns.

In a statement Rizzle Kicks said: ‘We can’t wait to bring our live show to Coca-Cola’s evening celebrations for the Olympic torch relay. Just being part of the Olympics is buzzing and to be involved with all the young people who are running the Olympic Flame is something we’re really excited about.’

James Williams, Coca-Cola’s relay director, said: ‘We have a fantastic opportunity to extend the magic and excitement of London 2012 to every corner of the UK.

‘We are taking some of the nation’s most exciting musical talent on the road with the aim of getting Portsmouth and the whole country moving to the beat in celebration of their local future flames.’
