Eastern martial art films are a challenge to discuss as they appeal to an audience with a very particular set of interests and … well, by definition they belong to a genre so far removed from the sensible mainstream that unless they have a huge marketing budget to support an anomaly success they are relegated to the lower sub genre shelves.

But whilst it would seem that Martial Arts films are traditionally all about the physical skills of the performers with a story and characters tailored to those skills. To truly enjoy the Eastern Martial Arts film experience you have to ideally have an understanding of the culture behind the film - as most of these films are as much about a clash of cultures based on historical events conveyed by and large with physical conflict - Jet Li’s Hero is a good example of this - but without a huge amount of exposition, back story or a 5 hour run time sometimes the subtext that can lift a story isn't conveyed appropriately as the pared down translation focuses on hitting the lowest common denominators or are lost in translation because most of these films are aimed at a local Saturday afternoon audience that already understand the significance of historical events or characters that make up the back drop of the story.

This means that usually Western audiences lose interest as they are left to take the on-screen action at face value and in doing so – usually lose all the sub text and the heart of the story. Bearing the above in mind what happen when a fairly novice Welsh Director makes a Martial Arts film in Indonesia? ... http://www.theestablishingshot.com/2012 ... -fury.html

The good: visually stunning, brilliant sound editing and excellent soundtrack!
The bad: not really my kind of movie -yeah, a tad too violent-

9/10
Islington was packed and the audience was even worse than usual :wall:

Had not looked at any trailers so had an open mind about this one. I would have liked a bit more development about the characters but reading previous posts about the cost of the film I guess they were on a tight budget. The fighting was really well done and had me on the edge of my seat. Thought the ending was good.
Some people walked out in Swansea. 8/10

Edinburgh was almost full.
Entertained at the start by some poor bloke who fell up the stairs and lost his irn bru!
Anyway, back to the film. No walk outs at all, and folks seemed to appreciate the film. I won't say enjoy as that much violence and the word enjoy doesn't sit well with me.
The film was well done and I thought the filming and the story were dramatic and drew you in. The choreographed fight scenes were amazing to watch although I could have done without the addition of knives and guns.

I enjoyed Monsters and I appreciated what Gareth Edwards did here as well. The fact they kept it in Indonesian I think improved it. It would have lost quite a bit in having it in English.
7/10 from me.

I enjoyed this despite the violence. The fighting scenes were fast and furious, well-choreographed and some rather painful to watch. Ouch!

Talk about bad-ass! One of the most hardcore action movies I've seen in a helluva long time.
Brilliantly choreographed, fantastically executed and just plain riveting.

Loved it!! (Would not recommend to my female friends, that's for damn sure)
