You mean Sparky the dog. Victor is the boy.

I saw Paranorman yesterday (with a voucher) and this tonight and enjoyed this far more, and quite a few laughs. It felt like you were entering the world of Edward Scissorhands but in stop-motion animation.

Also the red carpet footage was much better than normal, it had been pre-recorded and edited to fit the 15 mins and we were spared Alex Zane and had Lauren Laverne instead, please can we have her at future ones?

I quite liked this typical Tim Burton film that I've grown to like. 6/10

Agree the edited red carpet was much better and Lauren Laverne is at least 2000% better than Alex Zane!

Edinburgh only about 65% full which surprised me.

I loved this. I thought it was Burton back to his best. I really enjoyed the throwbacks of familiarity of Gremlins and Godzilla but I loved Sparky the dog.

The black warped humour really appealed to me. Can see little kids being fairly scared by it and would think 12A was far more appropriate.

Really enjoyed my evening. Thank you SFF & AMEX!!

watch the original frankenstein & bride of frankenstein & then watch this.

when you pick up some of the references it adds greatly to the enjoyment.

ps i loved it. wished they had got someone to do a vincent price voice for the teacher though.

9/10.

oh, 3D was dreadful & blurred, but brightness was ok.

Seen this tonight and I thought it was pretty decent. Typically Tim Burton, but one of his best. Not sure that the 3D effect actually added anything to the film, particularly with it being in black and white.

At the Edinburgh screening, the picture had really bad ghosting after about 15 minutes into the film and wasn't sorted out for about 10-15 minutes. I thought it was just my eyes or my 3D glasses, but my wife noticed it, too.

Busy screening with 90% of seats used plus a busy back row in Glasgow with Yinster, teddybear1 & OH and ploggit!
I must admit I am not a fan of Tim Burton films and while this was watchable, it hasn't changed my view of his films.
I can admire some of his "dark" characterisation and use of black & white but was surprised this lasted throughout the film.
I did expect a "Wizard of Oz" moment when colour would appear . . . it didn't!
I was surprised that given how young some of the audience were, most of them stayed in their seats throughout . . . not many toilet trips! (maybe they were too scared to move!)
At times I thought we could have played "Name that Film" as much seemed borrowed from other films.
As funthing said, the characters are creepy and there must have been great fun as the animators vied to make their one the creepiest!
Probably a good film for Hallowe'en, if you want to avoid folk coming to your house but not a "must see".
Marks 5/10

Watched this last night at a less than full Edinburgh which I found surprising - although, after viewing the film, it explained why there was a last day release of more tickets up and down the country. Clearly others were much better informed than I was.

This was frankly awful. The poor script aside (which has been covered elsewhere – notably by EthanRunt), the decision to film in b&w in a generally dark atmosphere (visually) and then choose to go for 3D – it was like watching a film with dark glasses on. I probably watched two-thirds of it with the glasses off – testimony to how technically ‘cheap’ much of the 3D was. There were also issues at times with the 3D when the on-screen movement was too ‘fast’ and, bizarrely, there were flashes of 3D multi-exposure when wearing the glasses. Poor stuff Disney.

I admire the likes of Tim Burton – it’s good to see the industry embracing something that’s ‘alternative’ to the mainstream - it’s healthy. However, ‘alternative’ doesn’t always mean ‘good’ and this film clearly falls into this category.

Unfortunately, too many fans of this genre are reluctant to criticise for fear that the industry will drop it. Get real, it’s films like this that WILL bring about the demise of future Burton-esque efforts.

No doubt it will open to great audience figures as an unsuspecting public, fed on some slick trailer editing (and with the backing of Disney) will attend in their droves with their kids.

Believe me this will be on DVD in the blink of an eye.

Kids enjoyed it too!..There was a few fuzzy moments with the 3D effect, i thought it was just my eyes trying to focus but the OH said the same! 7/10 :D

Went to see this last night in Birmingham and really enjoyed it.

Burton back to his best! But was a little dissappointed with the 3D as some of the time the screen got a little distorted and blurry due to the mix of 3D and black and white imaging.

All in all a fun dark and enjoyable film!

7/10 :P
