Jackman did not eat or drink for 36 hours to look gaunt. The scenes of deprivation and degradation were quite realistic and hard to watch at times without being moved to pity.raj101 wrote: One problem with the stage musical that the movie solves is that Javert never look like Javert, he invariably looks like a wellfed upper class public schooled chap on a comfortable salary who wouldnt give a roo's poo about being noble or dashing, whereas here faces are cast from a vast acting Hollywood pool so that a dishevelled Hugh looks like Javert and a shorn and skinny Anne is matched well for Fantine etcetera etcetera.

Found it absolutely intolerable. HATED it https://moviefilmreviews.wordpress.com/ ... iserables/![]()
"We’re at the end and the woman next to me cries. Before the film started she told her friend that she was worried this moment would come but she didn’t have any tissues. She must be crying into her sleeve, poor thing. I don’t have any tissues. Head pounding, two and a half hours later, horrified at the cinematic disaster produced by such an admired director, I start crying into my sleeve. We share a moment."

Re: Les Misérables
Saw this at Leeds Showcase. Huge queue with many of us without newspaper clippings..bit miffed as mine was still in the newspaper on the kitchen table
But i did try to push my point that TellTen conditions did not say to bring the paper..worth a try
Having said that we were fortunate that many people walked out rather than wait to the end to see if we could get in
the upside was the back row moved up to provide us with two lovely seats....swings and roundabouts
I haven't seen the theatre production although i did get the 19th anniversary at the Royal Albert Hall for Christmas..guess what i'm about to watch
I really enjoyed the film, the songs the singing..although i thought Russell Crowe struggled a bit (bless him) and Huge Jackman was great at times and struggled at times too, but that was minor to the epic feel to this huge direction.
Have to say Amanda Seyfield was a delight and Sacha Baron Cohen and Helen Bonham Carter few made for each other in this part.
No one walked out of our packed to the hilt screening and they even clapped at the end (love that)
Its a 9/10 for me

Re: Les Misérables
Saw this last night in Wimbledon. For the first time ever, anticipating a full turnout, the staff there were asking for the copy of the page of the Sunday Mail and giving those who had it priority access. Luckily, for the first time ever, I had the page with me. The cinema was 100% full and they even had to turn several people away. Two people walked out during the screening.
Although I hadn’t expected to, I really enjoyed the film, and wasn't at all put off by the singing, as some reviews have already mentioned. I thought Russell Crowe was excellent, and his singing was completely in character. And Eddie Redmayne, too, has a surprisingly good voice. Loved the comedy aspect with Sacha Baren Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter - both grotesque caricatures that lifted the grimness of the plotline. Both of the children (Cosette and Gavroche) were excellent.
So, yes, all in all I was very impressed - the costumes, cinematography and acting all excellent.

Re: Les Misérables
I knew very little about this before last night's viewing. I didn't realise Cockneys who can't sing instigated the Revolution..............in Paris!
I must've nodded off when they did Knees up Muvver Braaahn!
This was like a bad edition of the X Factor...........every 'song' merged into another, and to me sounded like a 2 and half hour caterwaul, culminating in that Courgette woman 'singing' like Pinky............or was it Perky?!
Dreadful, absolutely dreadful!

Yeah, no disrespect to any French people here, but those names are a bit strange to me - Fantine, Cosette, Eponine - and then you get a guy called Marius which is more appropriate for a Roman senator?

Yes some of us were turned away at Sheffield Odeon as it was oversubscribedPeachyLollipop wrote:Also went to the Odeon Covent Garden, thankfully no paper was asked for as I didn't have one. Arrived at 6pm and got the two last seats together at the front. Seemed like a lot of people were being turned away.
Did cry a few times, and wouldn't mind re-watching though I need a few months to recover for that 157 minutes running time. Still a fan of the Liam Neeson movie but I think this "modern" version wins.
9/10
