well I saw this again without falling asleep this time and it is not a bad film when watched in its entirety. Trouble is its just too long for its structure (big beginning, slow middle and end). It must have been a good 2 and half hours of plodding through alcoholism , though the down to earth resolution was worth it. The movie basically deconstructs the reverence we lend pilots in whose hands we rest our lives, and insists that they are normal people not above laws, vices nor feelings that everyone else subscribes to in everyday life. There was the suggestion that in letting go of 'being a pilot' that Whip finally had the opportunity to be himself, and it was being a pilot, the stress through which he in turn needed alcohol and drugs, which held him back rather than made him special. The price of trying to be seen as special is pa*d in terms of your life quality?

I thought it was OK... but a bit meh overall. Wasn't awful, watchable enough, but one of those films that takes an awfully long time to tell you what you already know going in.

Watched this at Bristol's Cinema de Lux yesterday, the queue was very long, which was a first for me! Overall the movie was well acted and enjoyable enough. I found myself sympathizing with DW's character but disconnected with Kelly Reilly's character who didn't add much to the story. The film could have done with being shorter as it dragged along in places. 6/10

I saw this film in Cardiff Vue last night, i would say about 85-90% full. The opening scenes made me laugh as i wasn't sure they were really needed lol if you know what i mean. I enjoyed Denzel Washington's acting, thought he played the character really well. I thought the middle of the film dragged a little though overall it was worth seeing.

It is well known in Occupational Health research that both doctors and pilots and so called "high stress professions" abuse both alcohol & drugs & in better managed organisations they are encouraged to "own up to it" - so that it can be dealt with.
It is incredibly worrying that the people that many people have to depend on - often at critical times in their lives - are often not operating (sometimes literally) at their best.

I went to Greenwich O2 to see this yesterday & got there late (around 6:50 pm), but was really lucky that I had a seat saved for me upstairs. There was around 70 people waiting to get in that eventually didn't get in. I was advised later that they were offered other films to see etc...

I really enjoyed this film as I'd had low expectations - based on previous reviews. I agree that it was a tad slow in the middle and to be honest I'm getting fed up of the propensity for films to be made ever longer & longer for no apparent benefit. I think this film suffers with this in that the middle, which was a little slow & drawn out- I think they could easily have edited it by around 20 minutes to make it better. Despite this Denzil was excellent as usual and I enjoyed the overall production. 7/10

Went and saw this at a packed Southampton Odeon and bump into eumenides( FMUK member ) nice to put a face to a name.Anyway back to the film i loved it, great cast and good story the time flew ( haha) as it was 2hrs 18 mins.The only small bit that was disappointing and im being picky could have done with more on the plane incident rather than the booze and drugs.Have recommended to friends.
