Re: The Paperboy
Oh, and should anyone be interested, here's my friend's review, which is much better written than mine above!

Re: The Paperboy
A very dull film that I expected to be terrible, but it wasn't even that good!
Re: The Paperboy
I'm really glad I'm not the only one who thought this was fairly awful.

Re: The Paperboy
Very disappointed with this, thought it was absolutely awful. Looked like they had the makings of an intriguing story with compelling life lessons on human nature but it was poorly executed. The story telling style left a lot to be desired, even if I will concede that some of the actors put in great performances.
Any excuse to see Efron in his tighty whities! - even that couldn't placate me as I got more irritated by the nonsense. Nice surprise to see Macy Gray on screen but not sure she was the best choice to fill the role of someone who plays narrator in the film.
The whole thing was lacking coherence - in a bad way. I would not recommend. 3.5/10, probably being quite harsh with it as I do think it had the makings of being great but for various reasons it is way off the mark.

Going to see this at Hackney later this morning. Any other FMUKers coming to the screening??

Don't know where to start with a review of this! It was awful. Hated the storytelling aspect... I found it really hard to know what was going on. The storyline didn't make too much sense. The acting wasn't great.
I thought the 15 rating was generous at best, should have been an 18 in my opinion.
3/10

Re: The Paperboy
I would agree with The Sparrow and martadelas
Saw it today the The Ritzy and found it quite a compelling watch, but unsure why. My thoughts are that the direction was a bit incoherent at times and the narrative hard to follow and the film felt a bit undisciplined, especially the middle third - but I applaud the uneasiness that this film, Stoker and Broken have given me over the past month...I am happy to see films that do not necessarily follow the usual paths and unsettle me whilst watching them.
It certainly wasn't as good as Stoker or Broken by any stretch, but an acceptable 6/10 from me - I am glad I went to see it.

I'm with you guys as well. I saw it this morning at Notting Hill. 1 walk out but that was quite near the end of the film oddly enoughpaulnadams wrote:I would agree with The Sparrow and martadelas

Well, you could certainly feel the steam coming off the screen. I thought it really captured the feel of the potboiler trashy novels I used to read in the 60's. Great performances by the cast. Its brave that such a cast can take the risk and play out of character that you normally see them in.
I had no problem with the rating, you saw nothing graphic at all, and given the context of the most talked about scene, it made sense. Our audience just laughed.
Call me perverse but I would have liked to have seen this as a mini series, get a bit more into the characters, see how they became the way they were.

Re: The Paperboy
Went to see this yesterday at a pretty full Cameo in Edinburgh. Hope not everyone was as bored by this as I was. Usually like these kind of movies but this one did not make any sense. The plot seemed to wander all over the place and can anyone tell me who Macy Gray was telling the story to at the start and why? Was that supposed represent the audience? Not even a decent mystery/crime thriller as the John Cusack character was to sleazy to care if he did it or not. Would like to read the book to see if it was any better than this though the author also adapted it into this mess. Sorry 3/10 for this one.

Re: The Paperboy
Saw this at a packed Edinburgh Omni tonight.
3 walk outs but after over an hour. Seemed daft. Could have understood if they'd only lasted 20 mins!
Well, comparisons with Killer Joe. Liked this even less. Macy Grey was the most likeable character and her voice was driving me nuts! Who decided she'd make a good narrator?
I got it, I just didn't like it.
