Re: Pacific Rim
I am wondering whether the guy who went downstairs at the same time as me to enquire/complain is here too? Seems I had quite a few FMUKer misses here in any case! We arrived around 9.40am too, would have been even earlier if the Jubilee Line hadn't had a minor hiccup (waves to TheOnes).

Re: Pacific Rim
Arrived at North Greenwich at 8:50am and proceeded to wait for my friends (no problems on the Jubilee for me. If anything it was a little too fast). Once they arrived we made our way over to the O2 at 9:30 to find a small cluster of people waiting by the shutters, as i proceeded to join them. Said hi to Beate briefly a few minutes later. Then when the shutters opened around 10am, i watched her zoom over to the balcony entrance. When i passed her towards the main entrance i was treated to her questioning of why they were opening the balcony later, which gave me an insidious smile across my face. Then the film started earlier than expected (no complaints from me, except for the 3d mess, but it was only for a minute. I think that was done to show all the naysayers of 3d something to compare it to, to then make their experience better in comparison (i for one love 3d, so meh).
As for the film, its hard to believe this was done by the same guy who made Hellboy 2 and Pan's Labyrinth (the latter being my 3rd favourite film). I thought this was a complete mess. So many plot holes, frakking abysmal dialogue (ranging from downright facepalmingly cheesy to "this is just for the audience's benefit"). Cardboard sterotype characters with paint by the numbers story arcs (Example: The rival to the main character who is a jock, and purposely mispronounces his name to voice his disapproval, but then respects him at the end for his last minute redemption). The character development was terrible and the attempts at emotion was just laughable.
The most interesting parts of the story (mind melding with the Kaiju brain), and needing a deeper bond to fight better were just throwaways and weren't expanded on at all. I thought there was something there to make this a smart movie. Like having the Male Man and Mako spend time together and bond in real life and get to know eachother as raw memories aren't enough. And how you are stronger as a team. But nope, just a few stares and we have a connection. And the Kaiju brain was just a plot device. Thought something could've been done with the Kaiju learning the other sides secrets with Newt accessing the hive mind and them adapting their plan of attack. But nope, it was just some inconsequential stuff that came out of it
Good action though.
Ended up with a good day as spent a great day down London after the film and saw some pretty colours at the cinema. So not a wasted day. Just a missed opportunity for the film
5/10

Gutted I didn't make it for this, to wait in for a new washing machine which ended up coming at 10.45am which was a good thing as it gave us the rest of the day to enjoy the weather. Think i would have liked the film though.

Its just them having it closed off made the choice between normal seating and Balcony easier for me (both have merits of their own), and i was quickly running out of time to make the decision as the people behind me were flowing in and creating a queue by the door. Then when i passed you i was like: "Oh yeah, she loves the Balcony, and she wouldn't be Beate if she just accepted defeat". Hence my smile

Re: Pacific Rim
the opening 3d cgi was excellent then it flattened out unfortunately. I also thought it was often boring.
there were so many, many plot holes and not even a slight attempt to have an cohesive plot.
eg. if you needed the monsters' dna to get in/out of the breach why release the woman's escape pod before you know the barrier is down?
i noticed that they do not have mobile phones in the future. twice during the film something happens and instead of making a call someone literally runs to give someone else the news.
1. when the Hero appears on the beach the old guy tells child to get help and child runs away. both of them do not have mobiles apparently
2. the Scientists discover something that is essential to stop the Heroes' Plan from misfiring. they do not call back to base. they are brought in by helicopter, which does not have a phone either, and run to the mike to speak to Idris and yell stop.
anyway, this is now a good joke between me & my plus one. we refuse to give up the right to instant voice communications in the future.
i know it is a just summer blockbuster but i think it was yet another disappointing crash-bang-wallop film aimed at teen boys. /right hand punches into cupped left hand to indicate readiness to fight as the robot's do quite a few times in the film.
if you just ache to see ugly monsters bash shiny robots like wwf wrestling matches then this is for you.

Re: Pacific Rim
more GI Joe (2) than Godzilla lol.
great 3d, but not much else, one for the 13 year old xboxers. Unintentional laughs abound. If you just want to see carnage, then watch the opening 30 minutes, then go for lunch, but be back in time for the last 45 minutes. Whilst its nice that there is an attempt at character building in the middle of the film, its a painfully slow and dull process to watch that part unless you are drunk. And I guess the action scenes will be better on a bigger screen.
We had the most apologetically nice security guard ever at Wimbledon.
As others have said, I am taken aback that Del Toro made this movie. The class gulf between this and his previous work is gargantuan.

Yeah the security guy was really funny! (he made me laugh more than I enjoyed the film!).raj101 wrote:more GI Joe (2) than Godzilla lol.
