Re: About Time
sorry MCG, full review follows now I'm on a fully working keyboard.
These days the main reason I like these Curtis movies is that its a glimpse into the lives of those slightly posh, jolly Brit Southerner families that I no longer can be fagged to waste my time getting to know. A 2 hour movie is easier than a lifetime friendship with someone who thinks they aren't rich (which gets annoying after a while, when you seem them spending grinningly willnilly for things you take years to save for). So this is all good for me.
As a film its time travel premise is carried out bereft of logic and full of plotholes. Rules of time travel seems to appear one minute then disappear the next. Some of the characters are annoyingly stupid, but I thought the cast did a good job with Bill Nighy leading with his usual awesomeness, simultaneously breaking into my top ten screen Dads as well.
Nice but dumb. 'Use it to get rich' lol.

Re: About Time
I don't know why this film has been received so poorly by most people posting in this discussion as I personally really, really loved it. It was absolutely charming, made me laugh (especially Bill Nighy) and even tear up once or twice. Yes, the time traveling is implausible and I'm sure riddled with plotholes when I will think longer about it but then timetravel storylines always are and I thought this was an incredibly sweet and lovely romantic film besides that. In fact I would go as far to say that I liked this a lot better than Love Actually and Notting Hill. 8.5/10

Re: About Time
that's because Love Actually is pants and Notting Hill is very overrated. But time travel will always be intriguing.

damn right my opinion.
I'd go with 4 Weddings as the Curtis benchmark, though not nearly as good as everyone makes out it is. Boat is better maybe. About Time bangs on the cupboard door of his top 5.
1/2. Weddings/Boat 3. Bean 4. Tall Guy 5/6. About Time/Hill
I'm not a Bridget Jones fan but it would be next on the list.
okay Love Actually isn't compete pants, but any film equating Hugh Grant with Tony Blair is never going to be in the runnings. Such a dumb move.

Re: About Time
unless About A boy was him too, that's a contender for his best.

Re: About Time
About a boy was based on a novel by Nick Hornby and Curtis had nothing to do with the screenpaly!raj101 wrote:unless About A boy was him too, that's a contender for his best.
I've just about recovered by the chronic boredom induced by last night screening. I must admit I thought that most people here unhappy with it were probably just the usual suspects that would dislike anything he does regardless of how good it is just because of the cheese factor! How wrong was I and how repetitive this film was! Not just the time travel repetitiveness but we've all seen most of the characters in his previous movies, like the american love interest or the senile relative who asks silly questions...
I was really disappointed with The Great Gatsby but that was probably due to high expectations, I can't say I had any expectations for this so it's definitely overtaking the spot of worst film of the year for me!
0/10

Re: About Time
Not a bad movie for me. Obviously not the best as well, but can be one time watch. 5/10
