Re: About Time
there is the question of course - should you use this power for personal gain, and for what type of personal gain?
Well in the movie he used it to get Rachel McA's character. Though he didn't use it to become superrich (which is utter dumbass in my book though he was quite well off anyway so maybe he didn't need it) but I suppose that wasn't the question the director was posing anyway.
McAdams character in the movie was the 2nd love of his life and so was quite a catch, but you know sometimes things are not meant to be and he could have had the 1st love of his life. Sometimes you don't get the 2nd choice for a reason (though she had a nice personality, apart from having a lazy punk ass job of course) and he might well have been much happier with his first choice.

Re: About Time
I quite liked it! I didn't realise it was Richard Curtis' last film though so i would have expected it to go out on a high like Love Actually or Notting Hill but the theme of time travel and doing it right is fitting therefore. I liked the cast and agree the film was a little long but not that noticeable. It was sweet and half rom-com, half serious drama so I feel it deserves a good 8/10. Thanks to Heat, Showfilmfirst and Cineworld Shaftsbury Av and of course FMUK for the chance to see it early!

Re: About Time
Oh boy, after reading these reviews I don't know what to say. Saw this tonight and enjoyed it, but not as much as Love Actually, which is one of my favourite films ever (I have two, the other is Atonement, and no, it has nothing to do with Keira Knightley [or everything, if you think about it, because they wouldn't have been the same films without her. Rambling now. Moving on]).
Of course there are going to be issues with plotholes. Time travel films tend to have those in spades, but the message worked for me.
Yes, Mary maybe didn't have as much choice in the matter, but as someone else pointed out, they would have met regardless.
Possibly the worst makeup ever, as Domhnall Gleeson is actually quite attractive in person (I was on set with him like 3 weeks ago) and in this film he kind of looked like a woman. He does look so different in the featurette!
Finally, I take great offense to the person who said the film was a piece of crap aimed at Americans. You are entitled to your opinion, and I'm not telling you not to think its a piece of crap, but please leave my nationality out of it. I'm aware it was not personal, but still think it was unnecessary. Thank you.

Re: About Time
they probably mean that its a piece of crap as a film, and (mutually exclusive to being crap) its been marketed towards what the writer thinks Americans want. They should say that clearly if that s what they mean - its not America's fault that Curtis and his British team continually portray Little England as being choca with posh chaps with swanky West London lives. Its a tiny bit of Britain, hardly representative of the UK, in fact probably the least representative of it!
IMHO its not a crap movie, and I wouldn't want to exclude the lovely Rachel McA from it just cos shes from the US.

Re: About Time
Agreed. I put a hand to my heart at that point. I so admired him on stage and screen.raj101 wrote:mmm that did make me sit up, I was mesmerised as to what the late great mans last ever words on screen would be ....'you, you! gggggrrrr... young, patronising, get out!! bllluurrg!'stuartboy wrote:Great to see cameo from poor late Richard Griffiths

Re: About Time
I finally got around to seeing this last night, and I'm afraid I had to p*y for it (but it was Orange Wednesday so I'm only half as peeved as I would have been!)
The first half of the film just annoyed me. I couldn't see the point of having a thoroughly unlikeable character like the landlord, and it didn't make sense that Tim would ignore his own happiness for that miserable sod. There were other plot elements that didn't make sense to me either, like when the dishy blonde girl told her friend to go and eat dinner on her own because she wanted to spend the evening with Tim instead - bitch! I found quite a bit of the dialogue unrealistic and quite clunky. I also felt that there wasn't much time travelling going on, which felt like a bit of a waste.
But as the film went on it started to grow on me more, perhaps as it became more emotional and I cared more.
We had an interesting discussion on the bus home about how we would use time travel if we had it (the first use being getting to the bus stop in time for the one we had just missed!)
