Saw this last night in Wimbledon. James McAvoy played a bipolar, misogynistic, chauvinistic, coke-snorting detective trying to get a promotion in order to win his wife back. It was a very intense performance, interspersed with hallucinations, from McAvoy as the unlikeable Bruce. In fact, strong performances all round and lots of recognisable names - Shirley Henderson (Harry Potter), Joanne Froggatt (Downton Abbey), Jamie Bell (Billy Elliott), Emun Elliott (Game of Thrones) but for me the best cameo was of David Soul (Starsky & Hutch) singing his own hit "Silver Lady" complete with backing singers. By the end of the film, I think we all understood what was going on in Bruce's mind and even started to pity him. Given the subject matter, I would find it difficult to say that I enjoyed the film, but that doesn't mean it was a bad film. I would give it 8/10.

Looking forward to seeing this having read the book years ago. Apparently they've tried very hard not to miss stuff out so if the book is anything to go by it will not be for the faint herated!

As you would expect it was pretty violent (it's an 18 rating) with plenty of nudity, swearing and coke snorting etc etc. Not something you would take your children to.

10/10

100% Pure Filth!

Brilliant

One of the most original films of the year.

Expected smut, bad language, drug-taking etc. Didn't expect jump out of your seat horror and certainly didn't expect emotion. Couple of moist eye moments.
A fantastic portrayal of a man's decline into the abyss.

Amazing soundtrack too. Stomping!
Superb locations too, but then I am slightly biased. Ha.

It was vile, dirty and utterly disgusting. Also hilarious in parts, disturbing and and exceptionally well acted...particularly by one James McAvoy who has risen against the odds to turn in the performance of a lifetime.
Words cannot express how brilliant he is. The movie is good but he is something else.

I would however be extremely careful about whom I recommend this to. There were 2 walkouts at West India Quay.
