Re: Music Concerts/Gigs
Fish - a master lyricist, probably one of the finest, but he needs to look into the technical side of his band, sound was poor quality. Great to hear old Marillion songs live though, but played way too briefly. I expected more of a stage act from him given his talent, he just seemed to be going through motions though that Phillipines song is a testament to his continued writing prowess. Fingers crossed hes not turning into Peter Gabriel.
Thunder - awesome, pretty much the main act albeit with a short but sweet and somewhat humourously add-libbed song set. The reason for turning up at the O2 tonight, in my opinion.
Mott The Hoople - whilst I acknowledge that a lot of good music was made in Motts time, its not really for me since it just sounds too dated and I left shortly after they started. Sorry Mott.

Sound quality at the o2 arena is very variable from event to event and not as good as other venues. The sound is usually set up for the main act, so support bands usually do sound poorer in comparison.raj101 wrote:Fish - a master lyricist, probably one of the finest, but he needs to look into the technical side of his band, sound was poor quality. I thought Fish was sounding like a Phil Collins Genesis at some points during his set. Thunder were good to see as they pulled out of the Bon Jovi 1995 Wembley Stadium gig I went to. Finally got to see them. Mott The Hoople were good. Don't know much of their catalogue but they worked well together, along with the drummer from The Pretenders. Also their sons and daughters did backing vocals and it was good how they worked in samples of other bands music for intros or during their songs. Virtually everyone was standing up for the encore of All the Young Dudes and Roll Away The Stone. I was pleased that I got to see these 3 acts live as I haven't seem them before.
Fightened Rabbit did a crackingly good set at Brixton the other week. The Jetpacks and Lanterns on the Lake were the support bands. The singer from Lanterns on the Lake came back on stage to perform with Frightened Rabbit during a song.
Re: Music Concerts/Gigs
It pains me to go to the O2 Arena for anything, such a horrible, soulless venue for a rock band to play, but a free ticket to finally see Mott the Hoople? I was there in a flash, it's what they call a no-brainer.
Mott started out well before I was even born, so it was good to catch them while they're still around! Thought they were really good, and the set (lasting just under 2 hours) was filled with some timeless classics such as Roll Away The Stone, All the Young Dudes, Walkin' with a Mountain, All the Way from Memphis, Rock & Roll Queen, etc... Very touching to see Ian Hunter introducing the backing vocalists made up of their various sons and daughters, loved that. I just wish they had played a different venue, but still 8/10.
Fish and Thunder didn't do much for me though, recognised a few songs here and there but wouldn't rush to see them again.

Re: Music Concerts/Gigs
Well I thought Mott the Hoople was pretty rubbish. A bunch of fat old guys in mullets wheezing their way through dinosaur rock is not my idea of a fun night.

Glad I didnt go to this - in their day a great band and even headlined back in the 1970s with Queen as their support !LondonCityNights wrote:Well I thought Mott the Hoople was pretty rubbish. A bunch of fat old guys in mullets wheezing their way through dinosaur rock is not my idea of a fun night.

Saw Lemaitre at Fabric last night - was really good. Felt weird being in Fabric on a Wednesday night and sober though. Good music if you're into dance/indie though!

Re: Music Concerts/Gigs
Blah, odd review, but you were in the minority. Several thousand actual fans of Mott had a good time, until the end, and that's all that matters. So the band are a bit old, so what? The venue was the main problem as it lacks any sort of atmosphere, and the few walkouts you mention were probably freebie hunters who will blindly go to anything for free.LondonCityNights wrote:Well I thought Mott the Hoople was pretty rubbish. Went to Brixton academy last night and the show was fantastic
I think the evening standard sum it up pretty well (Although I would give it 5 stars)

A horse walks into a bar and the bartender asks, "Why the long face?"
A pony walks into the bar and whispers, "I'll have a beer, please." The barkeeper asks, "Why are you whispering?".
"I'm a little hoarse."

Re: Music Concerts/Gigs
60s Unchained and Live was a good night out on Sunday. b*ght a very cheap ticket and got a free upgrade on the night. I got to hear Build Me Up Buttercup performed live by The Foundations which brought back memories of many a student night club outing. The stage could have done with bigger screens and having them higher up as one was obscurred by a cameraman and equipment. Some classic songs throughout the evening and even a performance of She's Got That Vibe by Ray Lewis.
No poor voices at all and in fact their voices sounded brilliant. Bill Medley brought on his daughter for a couple of solos and also duets. Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, The Foundations and Still Drifting with Ray Lewis were all entertaining. Yep, they showed some footage from the film Ghost for the well known song!
