Postman Pat: The Movie

#1 Post by stuartboy » Sun May 18, 2014 6:17 pm

Postman Pat has a surname!
Who knew?
Jess, his black and white cat, is a boy cat!
Who knew?

Light kiddie's fluff, but enjoyable none-the-less. Rather surreal X-Factor elements too.

Not quite up there with Pixar and Dreamworks, but still passed an hour or two.

Barely a quarter full Edinburgh Cineworld this morning. I'm guessing the kids stayed outside enjoying the sunshine rather than go to see a movie. Not much in the way of a colouring competition either - I was planning to wipe the floor with this! Bah! They did hand out balloons and a rather good sticker book to all teenies though.

To be honest, having grown up in Germany I wasn't all that familiar with Postman Pat. So I watched the trailer and when it came to his X-Factor performance and a guy said "I am Simown Cowbell and you can deliver!" I thought if this is the kind of unoriginal jokes I am in for I won't bother.
Plus, the weather really was too nice and I had to finish that photobook. Which I have now. So all is good.

We'll, that was not offensive. It wasn't great but not as terrible as I feared.

My nephews on their first ever cinema visit were quiet and mesmerised and sat through the whole thing without needing to go out at all. They enjoyed it and told their mum all about it afterwards.

They
Sticker books and balloons were great for the little kids.

This could have been vastly improved with more adult jokes (like the wonderful Lego Movie) as even though the children seemed engaged, I struggled to stay awake. 5/10

I should also point out the a) I too was joined by a little boy - to spare my blushes! and b) this being maybe the 5th time he has ever been at the cinema (twice for Frozen - he LOVES that!) this was the first time that he sat for the full 1 1/2 hours agog. Never moved a muscle. I'm guessing he liked it.

Also, given that this is aimed predominantly at pre-schoolers (my rent-a-child was 5) it did have more to it than that and is slightly more family-orientated than a nursery story. I wonder how much a toddler would get the X-Facter/Simon Cowbell/Ronan Keating stuff, not to mention the robots.

By the way, I was initially disappointed at the Special Delivery stuff, Pat's promotion, using helicopters etc. until I realised that this was all in the more modern episodes. I simply remember the stuff from the 80's.
