The Book of Life

#1 Post by stuartboy » Sun Oct 12, 2014 1:14 pm

I'm afraid I really hated this.
Boring and tedious.
Certainly very vivid and bright though. No idea why it needed to be in 3D.
I was expecting a whole series of stories from The Book, not just this single one-dimensional tale with nothing original about it. Also a surprising choice of music including Radiohead's Creep which was about as soporific and depressing as the film itself.
Not really much appealing to adults, and pretty dull for kids too.

I thought it was pretty brill - I'm down with any children's film that opens to a Le Tigre song and features a matador singing Radiohead. Could have gotten to the land of the dead a bit faster, but the production design meant it was always good to look at. I also dug the anti-bullfighting message.

A cut above most kid's cinema.

I'm looking forward to taking my son along to this on Sunday morning. For the most part, the animation looks good and I like the vividness of the colours which I am sure will appeal to the target audience. However, I really don't like the look of the animation for the faces of some of the female characters, specifically the big eyes on Zoe Saldana's character Maria - it looks a bit naff, like those awful Bratz dolls. I hope this proves to be a minor misgiving in what will otherwise be a fun watch

Saw this at the Glasgow Fort this morning which was really quiet . . .only about 25% full. I know there was a preview last weekend and another tomorrow in Glasgow but given it's the Saturday at the end of the school holiday week, I thought it would be busier.
Visually it is very bright and moves very fast to the point that I wanted to give my eyes a rest! . . .old age does not come alone!
The story is very deep, about life & death, good and evil, which I would have thought was not really a topic for children . . .I imagine some will only see moving pictures and colour but I would imagine some older kids having some questions and maybe even worries after watching this film. Will they be remembered or banished to the land of the forgotten?
Although a very visual film, I didn't really like the drawing style as I much prefer Disney style!
I enjoyed the film but couldn't imagine wanting to see it again.
Marks 7/10

Ps The music was good! :D
Preferred cinemas: Best: Glasgow Quay, Glasgow Braehead, Glasgow Renfield Street, Glasgow Fort & Paisley
Others I'd go to: Glasgow Showcase Baillieston

I really enjoyed it after I got used to the frenetic action and strange characters. I don't think this is for young kids though, the message is quite deep and some of the characters were a bit scary. Islington wasn't too full either which is strange after I couldn't get tickets myself. Do a lot of people book 4 tickets and then don't use them all?

I liked this too! Very colourful and very energetic. Thought the story was very dark and very deep and, like Beate, thought it was not for the very young, may be at least 7-8 years old, but we saw lots of young children at Vue Islington, who kept very quiet! The cinema was, indeed, not very full, and people can cancel odd numbers if they cannot make it, so a shame. 8/10

If anyone is interested in learning more about the Day of the Dead, there is a Festival at the Embassy of Mexico, Thur 30 Oct to Sun 2 Nov with an exhibition, screening, family workshops (pre-book) and tequila masterclasses (pre-book).

Ipswich was almost full but in one of the smallest screens. Went in at 10:08 and couldn't get any of my preferred seats. Delayed start for 20 mins due to technical problems.

Film was ok, fairly bored until the got to the Land of the Dead and then it really livened up. Loved the male & female villan/goodie.

Goody bags were given out at the end for the kids.

Busy at edinburgh. Having been in Mexico for Day of the Dead a couple of years ago, I found this interesting and fun.
I liked the film, it was well done.

My nephews will love the goodie bags!

I enjoyed this- staff at Sheffield seemed to give goodie bags to randomly selected families, should I have requested one ? But I enjoyed this film and currently looking to download the sound track
