Re: The Martian
Great that the security guy said no mobile phones or we may have had a lot of texting with it being a long film. Westerhailes had several people going to the toilet! Surprised at the number of children at this screening.
Enjoyed the film and didn't seem as long as I thought it would. 7/10

Re: The Martian
I also saw it at westerhailes. Was running late and managed to lose my bank card during the screening. Most enjoyable feel good film I've seen this year. Felt emotional at times, but overall a cracking film. The 3D was for the first time in my life an improvement to a film, 3D doesn't normally work for me but the start of the film when the space dust was flying around made it feel like I was there. As everyone has already said it went on a bit and could have done without the last 20 minutes or so, but I have a new found respect for Ridley Scott. 9/10
Ps cancelled my bank card in the pub after.

Re: The Martian
Saw the Martian at the New MK Stadium Odeon. The film was a cross between Moon (2009) and Gravity (2013). Some funny lines from Damon's Dairy chats. I'm still not sold on the 3D, it added most to the exterior space station scenes. I think the experience would improve greatly if the cinemas would turn off out all the spot lights as you see these reflected on the inside of the 3D glasses. Both this cinema and the MK Cineworld keep overhead lights on during the film, so you never really get fully engrossed like you did when the cinemas plunged you into complete darkness!!
Re: The Martian
Saw this tonight in a jam packed Edinburgh Wester Hailes in what was the second showing of this tonight. Was a real pleasure to get to see a film at a time when one wants to see a film for a change instead of the more usual 6:30. Made it all the more a treat as an evening out.
Thought the film was amazing visually with good use of 3d initially when zooming over Martian landscapes, but apart from floaty things I quickly forgot all about it being in 3D and just relied on my dark glasses to remove the otherwise blurring.
The humour was a welcome addition and I liked the blend of the eclectic soundtrack to the inherent tension.
One point: Lycra spacesuits? Just sayin'.
Also as the actual story is pretty basic: survival and rescue, the bulk of the film is purely scenic. It therefore doesn't really lend itself to a repeat viewing anytime soon.
An easy 8.5/10

Re: The Martian
Went to the first screening of the night at Odeon Tottenham Court Road. The foyer area looks swanky and new, looks like they finally refurbished the cinema. Alas, Screen 1 is still the same, small.
When I arrived and joined the queue at 5.40pm, one cinema staff was checking tickets, then going behind the counter to get 3D glasses, coming back and then telling the person where to go, but doors not opened yet, which got a bit tedious, as he was doing it one person at a time! Finally, someone else took over and just told everyone to go down to Screen 1 where we were given 3D glasses and told not leave any gaps. The screening was packed.
Latecomers were trying to squeeze into any available space. One latecomer remarked to his companion as they tried to squeeze through our row to the end, that it would have been easier if we all moved up! How selfish! No, it would not. Why should everyone move for latecomers so they can sit in the better seats!
The film was quite straightforward, had a good script, and humour, but a bit long. The thrills and tension was quite sparse for a survival film. All the cast played their part well, and you did root for Matt Damon at the end as he tried all sorts of ways to survive. 7/10
Shame the screen is too small for this type of 3D film. Would have been more immersive if on a bigger screen.
Looks like the second screening of the night would be packed too, as we passed the long queue outside, when we left.

Re: The Martian
Saw this tonight and totally loved it. Had to sit much closer to the screen than usual and actually found it improved the 3D.

Re: The Martian
One of the best space films in a while absolutely destroys Gravity in every other aspect but special effects.
I found it strange that they looked at every detail of the film except the aspect of matt damon surviving on mars for 4 years without an endless supply of oxygen although Nasa have discovered yesterday flowing water on Mars so we will see.exciting times
8.5/10

Re: The Martian
One very small thing that annoyed me was the readings on his diary can display were very standard in their movements. Ie the air% value dropped 0.1% every two seconds or so while the temp went up 0.2 every two seconds. I feel with a budget like they had they could have pa*d closer attention to this.

Re: The Martian
Great film, fantastic work from Ridley Scott and the soundtrack was great, added some levity in times of desperation.
Didn't expect too much to be honest going in (which seems strange given the cast and director!) but thought it was brilliant.
