Re: Work to live...
Well my job at the moment is a pretty regular job - Directors Assistant for a disability equality consultancy. Basically I do everything to keep the Director happy! Well that and other things (I usually have to deal with the awful jobs such as hiring, firing and disciplinaries etc). The job sort of found me and suited as I work flexible hours between 9 and 3 so perfect for the kids even though they are teenagers - it means I never miss a netball match or football match, I get to do parents appointments before the mad rush at 6pm etc and I can work my hours across the day from home during school holidays to a certain degree.
I did have my ideal job for a little while - a complimentary therapist - but the development of a minor mobility impairment meant I could not do it full-time as my back cannot cope with a full day of treatments at the end of it I would need more treatment than my clients but I still keep my hand in with a few clients particularly my reflexology clients and hot-stones therapy. Every summer I help organise and take part in a therapy fair whereby all treatments are done in the middle of the lavender fields - the smell is heavenly and really enhances the treatments given.

Wow, I'm glad to have had a positive effect and wish you all the very best for this! Some exciting times ahead.TheyCallMeMrGlass wrote:You know what, Anakin, Im going to do just that! Already looking at prospectuses for NVQ level 2 gym instructor which is first step before becoming a PT but I might think of cricket coaching too. I'm no stranger to adult studying as being in the ridiculously rapid changing field of IT, I have had to keep on top of the game with recent qualifications.
I had to have massage therapy a while back for a car accident (not my fault) and I loved it but couldn't understand how her hands did not ache as much as my back did before the session! I don't suppose it's feasible as a long term career... but surely it must be?destresserai wrote:I did have my ideal job for a little while - a complimentary therapist - but the development of a minor mobility impairment meant I could not do it full-time as my back cannot cope with a full day of treatments at the end of it I would need more treatment than my clients ...

I teach adults with learning difficulties. It is almost my dream job. If I could remove the paper chasing and form filling demands set by people who haven't a clue what's like in the classroom, then it would be perfect.

...maybe you should be a life coach TheyCallMeMrGlass..you certainly have a way of making us all feel more positiveTheyCallMeMrGlass wrote:You know what, Anakin, Im going to do just that! No better learning curve than doing it yourself!
Incidentally, I had always thought that my dream job would be to be a singer or actress (weirdly) but I'd hate to do it really because it's a bit harsh isn't it. If I could wangle my way in, I'd love to be a columnist of some kind. Not inspired by SATC (I'm not nearly as neurotic!), but I used to edit an email magazine at uni and loved that as well as writing the editor's comment bit...Well I did think about it for a while but you just made it sound such an obvious next step for me, lol. I do weekly editorials for my cricket website, and writeup extremely exagerated and humourous (well, attempted humour) match reports. Its so much fun to do (I dont get pa*d for doing it, its purely voluntary) that I guess it would be a dream job if I did something similar as a pa*d job!
Could you not take up singing/drama class part time? Remember Uncle Albert in Only Fools and Horses? He worked in a bank for 40 years until he was 57 and then changed careers into acting!
So to everyone (including you Ms Thrifty), its not too late to pursue anything you dream of doing...!

For me its a boring part-time Data Inputter but my dream is to turn the little community cinema into something exciting...and its funny i really feel like we can

Good news everyone I've invented a device that makes you read this in your head in my voice!
Thank you FMUK for inspiring our community cinema http://www.Selbyglobe.co.uk

Re: Work to live...
At the moment I work as a project manager in charge of everything IT related as well as everything to do with the big move of this office. It's alright, nothing fabulous. But the company is nice and the job is more challenging than my last position so that's pretty good.
But really I would love to travel for work. Proper travelling I mean, not going to a conference once a year. A hotel critic, travel writer....something like that. Would love to set up my own sustainable travel company. No package holidays at chain hotels but seeing the 'real' cultures.

Re: Work to live...
At the moment I'm an author/illustrator and at the final stages of my first book to be published next year. Will be starting the next one in September - this site is proving fantastic for a tad of procrastination!
Re: Work to live...
Nope, didn't have anything sorted before we moved. Have already been in this job for more than 3 weeks so was pretty chuffed that it happened so quickly!Ms Thrifty wrote:Wow, jmd1983, you have a job already - congratulations! Or did you arrange it before you moved?
Sounds great lemondrop!

Your dream sounds interesting! Employ me if you do set up the company one day.
