Florence Foster Jenkins

#1 Post by Boo » Wed Apr 13, 2016 4:28 am

Yesterday I saw the premiere Florence Foster Jenkins at the Odeon Leicester Square

This was an enjoyable film, a bit sad, but interesting as it was actually a true story.

I was there too and really enjoyed it, thinking I might not beforehand.

When you hear it's about the worst opera singer in the world, you get a preconceived idea about what it's going to be like, but it confounds them all.

It's touching, well-acted, and although it's set in New York, was actually filmed in London (so the director said in his intro).

I then bumped into Ed Miliband which was a bit random. Me and my friends all agreed he's much handsomer in the flesh than on the telly!

Also lucky enough to get a ticket for the premiere in Leicester Square.

I was a bit apprehensive about this film because I didn't think it would be that funny especially with Hugh Grant in it. Surprisingly the film turned out to be very funny and enjoyable, mainly due to Meryl Streep's performance. But I have to give a special mention to Hugh Grant's dance number which was surprising and funny because I didn't know he had it in him!

Saw this tonight and thought it was excellent.

It's very funny but Stephen Frears and Meryl Streep are far too classy to play it purely for laughs.

Hugh and Meryl's relationship is complex and wonderfully played and Florence is a fully rounded character, not just a silly rich lady who can't sing, and it's all delivered with a deft, light, entertaining touch 9/10

Also saw this last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. Another great performance from Miss Streep and good to see Hugh Grant back on the big screen, I've never understood the hate he gets. I actually didn't expect it to be so funny, the audience at the screening I was at were in stitches during several scenes.

Saw Florence last night in Glasgow Showcase. Great to see stuartboy at the screening as no other Fmukers around. What a complex life Florence had . . .I definitely need to find out more about the true character. Loved seeing the photos of the real characters and also what became of them. Amazing how alike they'd made Meryl Streep to the real Florence. Loved Florence, beautifully acted by Meryl Streep. One minute I was laughing at how badly she could sing and the next I felt so sad for the way her life had turned out following her marriage at 18. Hugh Grant played his part very well and actually didn't seem as wooden as he can sometimes. It was nice to see at the end how the real character lived after Florence's death as it's definitely not what I expected.
An entertaining film and worth seeing particularly if you like 'based on true stories'.

Thought Simon Helberg was excellent and played the role perfectly. Reminded me of Gene Wilder in Charlie and the chocolate factory. Trying to contain his laughter while living in his own wee world.

I thought it was odd that there was no explanation as to why Florence was scared of knives, sharp objects. Was expecting a story about her ex husband and a bit more about how Florence's personality evolved with the fact her husband slept around

I've just seen Florence at Brighton odeon screening and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was much more fun than I thought it would be as I'd read up on the real Florence. I expected good things of Meryl Streep but Hugh Grant really surprised me. Thank you for posting the codes.

This bitter-sweet film was a welcome distraction this morning but most of the laughs came from the audience laughing at her terrible caterwauling. The acting was all splendid but it didn't on the whole leave a big impression on me.

Would be interested to know how this compares to Marguerite, which I didn't manage to see.

Saw this at Wimbledon yesterday. Thoroughly enjoyed it. A bitter-sweet story alright. Uplifting nonetheless as people initially drawn to her by her money came to have a genuine love for her. The laughs are not at the expense of Florence's singing but more at the wonderful expressions on the faces of the actors.

Preferred this version to Marguerite which was more ponderous and painted a darker picture. It tried too hard and too long to derive humour from Marguerite's poor singing. Rather tedious at the end.
