Having avoided all mentions about this, I had not realised this was a true story and one that is very recent too.
However, the mix race relationship and eventual marriage seems over simplified by the film. I did not feel the charisma between the two leads that their love affected the UK and Bechuanaland (now Botswana), and apartheid politics. Rosamund Pike although an English Rose, seems permanently surprised and I didn't feel their struggle. I would have liked more of the history of that time not just skimmed over and to get to know the characters more, and the cultures in colonial Bechuanaland. The acting felt a bit bland. David Oyelowo just does not do it for me, he just does not have the charisma. Now if it was Idris....
As an historical event affecting governments, I didn't feel the drama of the scandal at the time, or the urgency.

Re: A United Kingdom
I agree with prettyxcool's assessment, particularly wrt Pike and Oyelowo (most definitely no Idris!).
I was aware of the story before, however not so much the duplicitous and unacceptably powerful British government involvement at the time.

Re: A United Kingdom
Saw this film back in October & unlike the 2 contributors above, thoroughlyenjoyed it, it intertwinned a love story very well with a history lesson, yes it was glossed over a lot but if we wanted every detail all films would be 4 hours long. I have been in mixed race relationships & believe me if they showed how it really was in the 50's & 60's we'd have riots in the cinema.
Altogether an enjoyable if somewhat hollywood version of history 8/10
ps as much as i admire Idris I dont think he would have added anything except eye candy

Re: A United Kingdom
Larry, we also liked this so you are not alone. I thought the performances were just right and yes, I agree that we did not see the many problems the couple would have encountered in the UK but the film was meant to dwell on their future in Bechuanaland and the problems faced there. Amazing story and glad it has been told in such a sensitive way.

Re: A United Kingdom
Ejwrank glad you enjoyed the film, & yes you hit the nail right on the head as to where the film led. I like a film that lets me think for myself not spoonfeed me every morsel. I'm sure if 3 different people saw this film you would get 3 different opinions but i'm sure they'd agree that it was a controversial era in our history dealt with by the filmmakers in a well judged way.
