The film was certainly action packed from start to end and a real spectacle on imax. Maybe a bit too realistic as I actually felt a bit seasick! To be honest though as much as I really liked it, I didnt love it. 8/10

I am not usually a fan of 'war' films but with a stella cast I thought I'd give Dunkirk a go.

Wow - I was completely enthralled throughout the film! Fantastic performance from the entire cast. The soundtrack was perfection. The story line was easy to follow and I learnt a lot more about what those fantastic men went through.

I felt it was a great tribute to all those in the armed forces, both then and now. It is a must see for all ages.

Amazing! Stunning! One long goosebump from start to finish. Defenitely the Elgariest movie I've seen (despite Harry's Tiles! So thankful he didn't sing).
Kenneth Shakespeare was a bit pointless, but others did admirably.

Heroes, one and all.

good stuff, basically three unrelated stories that eventually became entwined at Dunkirk.

I liked the airborne channel crossing shots best, which would be the reason to see this in IMAX, I would imagine. The movie does portray the RAF as extremely committed right down to the last gasp, which is probably about right seeing as you'd need to be a bit "over-committed" to fly those planes back then.

None of the overly juddery scenes, its all about set peices built out of desperation, teamwork and self-interest that go slowly, menacingly wrong, compounded by a well chosen soundtrack.



4 stars, which was weird since I didnt really like it in the first 20 minutes, but it had me in tears by the end. Cannot wait for the rest of the trilogy now!

Wonderful film . . .sound level was such that you felt as though you were in the spitfire or on the beach being fired on. Thought the presentation of the Dunkirk story was excellent though I was surprised how few 'extras there seemed to be on the beach . . .certainly nothing like the numbers who gathered there ( I deducted 0.5 for this!) Definitely a film to be seen . . .war is not sanitised or heroic here . . .should be seen by senior pupils in schools.

Good acting spoiled by bad editing.
Most of the movie is set around one incident and its seen from 4 different viewpoints, which wouldn't be bad except that the story jumps from one viewpoint to another to another at a much different point in the story, usually several hours earlier. It gives a disjointed feel to the movie. Also it looks like they barely managed to scrape together 1,000 extras for the beach scenes and there's supposed to be 400 times as many. That beach should be crowded and it wasn't.
Here's the maths.
Assume the beach is 2 kilometres wide and the soldiers stand 1 metre apart. Then a single line of men would have 2000 men in it. 400,000 men would need 200 such lines and extend to 200 metres of beach depth. You can play with these numbers a bit but you cannot get away from the fact that the beach looked very empty. If you allow for sleeping room then the necessary area doubles and they were there for days.
It should have looked like a crowded holiday beach but with soldiers instead of tourists.

i had problems trying to describe this in spanish at my spanish class.. A Nolan movie that delivers an epic.. The trademark for him is clearly perspectives around a particular battle.. showing both action and non-action.. emotions. A range of critique about it but i don't normally watch war movies.. but this was worth it..

Incredible movie. Beautiful cinematography, and what a score from Hans Zimmer! His music elevates the film to a whole new level of suspense. It was so loud during the screening I was at, but it really added to the overall mood and tension. The sound design was great, I did actually feel like I was there with them for certain parts of the film.

Really liked the overall structure, to have three different narrative strands happening simultaneously before all colliding at the end. Overall, I'd rank this in the upper half of Nolan's filmography. Definitely going to be watching this one again.

Nolan has really excelled in his work with Dunkirk.I personally think that his choice to make time the real antagonist Time rather than the advance German line was excellent as it creates a greater sympathy towards the poor soldiers: You can hold back German soldiers but can you really hold back time ? The war in skies with the British RAF and the German Lufthansa was thrilling to watch and arguably one of the best cinematography in the film, the realism of the history of the event made it hard to distinguish what was CGI and what was not. Finally the sound engineering was simply exquisite; Nolan has completely mastered the use of sound to portray many things and it allows the audience to get a taste of the sort of
loud, deafening sounds the poor soldiers would be accustomed to on that beach in Dunkirk. 5/5 Best movie of the year (so far)
