Re: The Diary Room
Unless goods you b*y are faulty, you have no legal right to return them.

If I've b*ght something can I change my mind?
Many of us have b*ght something only to later decide that it's unsuitable or unneeded. Yet shops are under no obligation to take your goods back, just because you've changed your mind, only when they're faulty.
The exceptions to this are when b*ying on the internet, mail order or financial agreements, when you do often have cancellation rights.
Yet even when you don't have rights plenty of companies do still give refunds. These are mainly high-street stores with returns policies allowing you to simply take back whatever you want within a set timeframe. You're less likely to be able to change your mind for a service contract that's started though.
These goodwill polices have encouraged more and more customers to expect this as a right, even though it doesn't always apply.
This doesn't mean you can't ask though. Shops would rather keep customers happy than be sticklers for these rules. They consider all customers to be potential clients who will use their services or b*y their products again and again.
So, in summary, while it was certainly bad customer service to treat you like this, they did not have to take it back, and if this restocking fee is mentioned on your bill, there is not much you can do I think - apart from never shopping there again I guess. Be glad they gave you most of your money back!
I checked their website and it says the following:
http://www.comet.co.uk/static/services/ ... -your-mind
If you've opened the box
As long as you’ve not actually used the product, the process is the same. But if the item costs £25 or more, there’s a restocking fee of 10% of the original price up to a maximum of £99. This pays for repackaging and restocking.
To avoid this fee you can ask for a gift card credit for the full value.

Caught the last 20 minutes of Penn & Teller, looked pretty good, love it when they're just explaining the trick and then pretend something goes wrong... blood & guts everywhere!

Re: DO NOT SHOP AT COMET
Never heard of a re-stocking fee but haven't been in Comet for years. Wasn't the transformer mentioned in specs?bigboyshanks wrote:hi everybody ive just been taken for a ride by comet , i b*ght a jvc 26" dvd/tv for the bedroom .
i resived it on line and went in store to collect , got it home pulled it out of the box to find it came with a transformer .
so it would not look good hanging down the wall , so i took it back and i was told i would be charged a 10% restocking fee .
WOW i asked to speak to the manager who was so rude towards me telling me it states the restocking charges all over the store and on my bill ..... ive wrote/phoned and e-mailed comet with this problem and was told its down to the store to refund me .... so thanks comet ive lost £23 .

It's on their website. Unfortunately bigboyshanks had opened the box - and he didn't ask for a gift card credit for the full value - or possibly wasn't told he could do this. Which is why it is so crucial to read the return policy carefully.

Re: The Diary Room
There's all sorts of hidden things on receipts etc. I b*ght some headphones in a shop, just opened the packet realised they were the wrong ones and asked to change them but was not able to. On the receipt is says if something is opened, you cant take it back unless faulty.
I never look at receiopts or anything like that. I hve to say, I've never heard of a restocking fee

Re: The Diary Room
Can't see any mention of transformer on site, if I'm looking at right item plus it gives impression it is suitable for wall mounting. I suppose It's a warning to ask all questions in shop before leaving with product and to read whatever it says on box too.

It doesn't mention the fee if returning item within 7 days.

Re: The Diary Room
DO check suitability before b*ying
The 'As Described' part of the SadFart rules is crucial.
Imagine you b*y speakers for your TV, take them home and they don't connect to your specific television.
If you've proof (take notes if possible) the store said “it'll work with your telly” then it's not as described, so you can return it. Yet if you didn't ask, and it's not in the literature, and the speakers still work if correctly plugged in, it's your problem - not the store's
So it did not mention a transformer and gives the impression that it is suitable for wall mounting but did he ask and did they say it would be suitable? Probably not.
