Selby Community Cinema - Help Wanted

oh my! what a brilliant thing you've done, massive well done to the pair of you !!!! hmmmm it's kinda hard isn't it cos the new films will cost a bomb and tbh I can't see many people p*ying or making the effort to see a film that they can get for a couple of quid in their local cinema. From what I know of older folks, they like a bit of raucous humour, so I'd plump for The Hangover if you could afford it, or how about The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas, I bet not many people saw that when it was on general release. Anyway once again, I am in awe of the pair of you, you don't fancy moving it from Selby to Sunderland do you ????

As for silver screens, I often used to take my elderly neighbour to the cinema, but found it increasingly difficult to predict what would be right. At Babel, all he could talk about was the Japanese girl's behaviour. But he loved "Miss Pettigrew lives for a day" and "August Rush". Not top of my list - but no bad language and good old fashioned romance. He said he liked "six days in Paris", but I think that was because it had subtitles! (His hearing is not that great!) I thought it was probably a bit direct for him, even if he did laugh from time to time.

I just went to look at my dvds to get some inspiration and did a double take at The Way we Were - but has everyone not seen that (and I guess, thinking about this - the other one that goes with this is Butch Cassidy). I stopped at Chaplin - RDjr is outstanding in this.... and thought about Michael Clayton (mum loved this). But, I know my mum would not p*y for anything that was on the TV, and I've seen all but Michael Clayton on TV.

Going back to my media days, I remember that older men (maybe not just older men!) like history programmes. So, maybe historical films will work well with them.

I think Gran Torino is great - if a bit violent. It has an oldie in it, who is not a minor character, although it is a bit violent for oldies. I think the "Meet the ..." (Parents, Fokkers) series is great for young and old alike, but it is often on TV.

Oh and anything Denzel Washington, Robert Redford, George Clooney, etc. is fine with my mum!

Or - finally - the new version of Wuthering Heights ... if it were made available to you from Screen Yorkshire... would tick all the boxes for Selby - and not just for the oldies.

How do you define oldies? Cause the OH is an OAP now and he has basically the same taste as me - loves rom-coms, isn't too much into arthouse but loves animated films, loved Slumdog Millionaire, Gran Torino, Star Trek and the Boad that Rocked...

......oh forgot to say LOL In January the ...above sentence will be updating our equipment (lovely fat grant) and providing a travelling high spec amazing thingie (so sorry to be blondish ) which can offer us 3D movies and the options of live opera links ....Now that's exciting

The OAP screening would be what ever they want. My Mum's 72 but loves modern films and sing-a-longs....i know she wouldn't want to watch anything black and white. I woudn't want people to assume that a silver screen means we treat you like you're 100!

I think its true 60's is the new 40's. People act younger, dress younger as well being fitter and more outgoing.
