I too had no idea Facebook was so complicated or vulnerable to such scams, which sound like the sort of thing I've read about happening on E-Bay. As for the suggested friends, no, it can't be on the basis of existing ones as I neither made nor received any requests - so far as I know, no-one I know knows I'm there, if that makes sense?

I think when you register with facebook, you give them permission to access your contacts from your email account which is why it is able to suggest friends.

I can believe that, but honestly, none of these people are contacts of mine outside work nor privy to my e-mail address. Mystery!

I politely declined. And still ignore the prompt, but since I have a smart phone, I think it's done it anyway :wall:

Some websites are very annoying in that way: you think you've done what you need to, then they keep nudging you to add this, that and the other.

I have a facebook account but I try my hardest to avoid it. I mostly use it for advertising my blog/videos. It's pretty easy to lose track of what you're connected to though..
Go ahead, make my day - by visiting my blog: http://jacobthehobnob.wordpress.com/

Member number 33 of the "100 free films in 2012" club. I saw 32, which is rather delightful.. I beat Mr. Glass on free films but he narrowly inched me out on total films seen.

Member number 33 of the "100 free films in 2011" club. I saw 20, interestingly enough. My more realistic target was to see more free films than TheyCallMeMrGlass. I lost.

I have a fb account for work and a false one for comps & vouchers, not that I've won anything but the vouchers are useful.
The false one has its own email address without any contacts or personal emails in it.

I also use mailinator.com for vouchers that require an email address. It was useful for 'sign up' offers like a free drink or meal offers that print your name on them.

The winner is Mr X and please email johndoe@wherever.com to claim your prize.

That happens on twitter as well which seems silly as it is an invitation for people to fraudulently claim a prize.
Well when I won tickets for Deep Purple at the O2 the company posted:

The winner is 'my name' and your tickets will be waiting for you at the box office!!!!
