Re: Danny Collins
good movie if you can get put aside some serious character flaws in the story and get past some of the early very cringeworthy but funny scenes ("sweet caroline" type chorus sung by en mass oldies included. waaa, waa, waaaaaaaaa, that kind of thing.). The first half at times threatens a saccharine snooze in you, so slowly are the pieces of it being laid together. The strength of this movie lies heavily in the last half where all the threads that have slowly been laid down in the first part of the movie begin to knot up. And of course Pacinos performance is top dollar.

fav 5 films of the year - Tenet, Bill n Ted 3, Invisible Man, JoJo Rabbit, ?
Re: Danny Collins
Nice movie, poor audience. Ironic or intentional that it mirrors Pacino's own career where the last third has seen him repeat the same tired role instead of doing something different like this character? And although the

ending is perfectly ambigious I can see the reception to the movie sending Pacino back to playing shouty detectives.
Raj's post also reminded me that it's a pity most of the problems are just solved with money.

Re: Danny Collins
really enjoyed this but mystified about the "lol" reviews here.
yes, a few laughs, but to characterise this as a comedy would be a stretch imoo
great to see pacino actually acting again & agree, bobby cannavle (sic) keeps putting in great supporting actor turns
highly recommended / loved the loose ending
8/10

Re: Danny Collins
I would argue that Pacino has actually changed his roles in the last five years, no longer just doing crime movies but he has been pretty diverse:D-Fens wrote:Nice movie, poor audience. Wilde Salome
Phil Spector
The Humbling/The Last Act
Jack & Jill
You Don't Know Jack
It seems like he is doing one film for the big money and then the next for himself.

Re: Danny Collins
Saw this yesterday in a nearly full Wimbledon Odeon. Like “A Royal Night Out” it was inspired by true events and like “A Royal Night Out” 95% of the film (or more) was pure fabrication. That notwithstanding however, it was an enjoyable film, made all the better by Al Pacino’s stellar performance as Danny, the ageing rock-star trying to find himself after a long-lost letter from John Lennon turns up (this is the bit of truth in the story). Danny was a mega-star (in the likes of Tom Jones or Barry Manilow) who had found fame by betraying his roots and following the commercial path. Along the way he had fathered a son, who he had never met – so in addition to returning to his love of song-writing, he also decided to be a part of his estranged son’s family, whether his son, Tom, wanted it or not. Annette Bening was wonderful as the hotel manager – there were some wonderful one-liners bouncing between her and Pacino. A fun film, definitely recommend – Al Pacino was on top form. 9/10
Re: Danny Collins
I did look at IMDb to check I wasn't completely unfounded, I could see him being known as the Shakespeare guy because he's alternated a lot with that but purely in terms of audience perception, as a couple of the ones you mentioned are TV movies or dependant on him being old I can still see his career being remembered as amazing when he was younger and mainly reshashing it since, hoo-ah!FBS wrote:It seems like he is doing one film for the big money and then the next for himself.
I hope I'm wrong though and this movie was his Lennon letter to inspire a great period of diverse and memorable roles starting with his Marvel movie.
Re: Danny Collins
Saw the film last night with my son and it got some laughs from him. Great one-liners and a sincere film which kind of sends up the whole celebrity notion - would rate it 8/10.

Re: Danny Collins
People are always going to talk about his iconic roles, it's only natural when they are of such magnitude. And he has done quite a few of them as well. There aren't many that have had so many big hits that have been around as long as he has.D-Fens wrote:I did look at IMDb to check I wasn't completely unfounded, I could see him being known as the Shakespeare guy because he's alternated a lot with that but purely in terms of audience perception, as a couple of the ones you mentioned are TV movies or dependant on him being old I can still see his career being remembered as amazing when he was younger and mainly reshashing it since, hoo-ah!FBS wrote:It seems like he is doing one film for the big money and then the next for himself.

Let's face it, that body of work is still great to be remembered for.
And I'm holding out big hopes for Maglehorn as well. Looks like him back doing some method acting.
Re: Danny Collins
Loved it! Definitive plans to adopt Al Pacino! And my second fav was Annette Benning. The way she played the straight-laced, dead pan hotel manager... with a big heart...was just beautiful.
We definitely had a patter! 7/10
