Outstanding performances from the two leads as Ma and the little boy, Jack. Strong supporting cast too. A story of two halves with a tense, thriller aspect in the first half. Seen through the eyes of Jack, a 5 year old child discovering for the first time a world that exists outside the room. Fascinating and absorbing, emotional and heartbreaking. I shed a few tears. Although there were a few niggles, like Nick had not seen Jack for 5 years and the kind police woman working out so quickly what had happened.

Not having read the book, this was done so well, I thought it was a true story, not a film version of a book, as it made me think about incidences I have heard on the news about girls getting abducted and having children fathered by the abductor.

Beate wrote:If I'd been Joy I'd have given that horrible journalist a piece of my mind! How dare she even suggest she did anything wrong by keeping Jack with her? He clearly gave her strength to go on and ultimately got them out of there, though it was a bit ludicrous how quickly the kindly police officer pieced together the location of "Room" from the few things Jack said.

It was good to see what happened afterwards. No wonder the parents' marriage had disintegrated - the father clearly couldn't cope well with anything much, while I thought the mother was amazing. When Jack said "I love you Grandma", my heart just constricted. Very well acted by everyone.

I couldn't agree more (particularly re. the journalist).
Definitely recommended 8/10

Thought this was a brilliant film. The acting from the little boy was amazing and should certainly be up for an award. I was engrossed from the out set and found it very moving. I had not expected much so this far outdid my expectations. Definitely recommend. 10/10

I really liked this, mainly due to the unique perspective of the little boys view of the world and him experiencing things for the first time. The actress who plays the mother was excellent too, I'm sure she'll be asked to do a number of other acting roles after this. 8/10

I had the same question about Jack!

Very good movie even though I think the tension was until the scape, after that I was expecting a bit more.

I saw this last Sunday. A very moving film & for the record, I also thought Jack was a girl throughout the whole movie.
I suspected his mum was protecting him from the bad guy by calling him/her Jack as if the child was a girl, perhaps it would have been abused also. But actually Jack was a boy after all

Pre-warning if you're prone to crying (like me). Sobbed all the way through.

I would like to add that this isn't a depressing movie, but a very hopeful one and I came out really uplifted despite the heavy subject matter.

Just saw this. Stellar performances from entire cast and what a clear and painful reminder of a few women's realities. The strength and determination of that woman for the sake of her child truly shows - I hope Brie Larson wins an Academy Award for this. In spite of heavy topic, it's a beautiful story - thoroughly recommend.
It's also one of the best book adaptations I've ever seen.
