Thanks Bevvy! Well these days anything in a foreign language is considered arthouse by people, the City of Gods, the Gomorras.... There's certainly lots of action in those films, but they are not mainstream...

Well I entered a radio competition that phunkygal posted for tickets for Sunday 16 August, just in case I couldn't do the 9th. Now I have won 4 tickets and it turns out they have changed it to 9th August as well!
Oh and the Time Out verdicts for 11 August are out - I haven't won but hey, that's ok this time. They are promoting this quite a bit though, with Eros as well and that Q&A screening at the Curzon Soho.
I hope it's good!

It was ok, but nothing I would want to watch again, it was quite violent as well. All this gangland culture is such a f*cked up world, whether it's here or in Mexico. Teenagers should watch this film but somehow I don't think they will. I believe two people left 45 minutes in, I wouldn't have done that, the cinema was too comfy and cool. Predictably, it wasn't very full though.

6/10.

Good film, but not great imo - the story just seemed to go through the motions. The guy's journey was particularly reminiscent of Neil Gaiman's interpretation of the story of Orpheus, but it didn't have the dramatic impact it should have. As for the girl's story, I didn't b*y it when she left the train - many moments and decisions like these were just forced. Then there was the pointless, cliched story of the boy losing his innocence - done properly, very good (see City of God). Done here, a waste of time.
On the other hand, the film was excellent to look at, and it was worth the time investment.

cliche'd or not, we liked it, well worth getting up on a Sunday morning for, shame more people didn't feel the same, the cinema was 40% full if that, yet many of me mates couldn't get tickets to this for love nor money despite all the codes, shame on those that grab tickets for the greed of it :nono: 8/10 from us

Saw this at Screen on the Green, fairly full. OK film very well shot, but the slow pace makes it seem like you've been in the cinema for many more hours than you actually have by the time it finishes. I found it quite predictable, and agree with AYBG about when the girl left the train, which just wasn't believable at all. 6/10 for me.

Saw this at Nottingham Broadway, it was the first time that I’d been to this cinema as it is a small one and not part of a big chain I often forget it’s there. I was pleasantly surprised with the seats comfy, despite being pink. Hurray – there were no late comers and no disturbance of any kind.
The film was pretty much what I had expected, sad at the end but still thoroughly enjoyed it. Can’t believe this is my 3rd subtitled film I’ve seen at the cinema.

This formed the basis of a bargain day out in Brighton for OH and me: free film; free parking as OH is from Brighton so knows where to go (drove down as train fares would have been £22.20 and that's cheap day returns); £10 meal deal at Pizza Express; stroll along the seafront in the sun and back via the scenic route over Ditchling Beacon.

As for the film, it was indeed very violent - more so than I expected - but also strangely sentimental at times. It also seemed longer than 96 minutes, but I think that was because I was fed up with the endless tension. However, I did think it was good, if manipulative, and I was sure it would be right up OH's street, which it was. It reminded me so much of "Slumdog", though no-one else has mentioned that so far.

It made a nice change not to go to a multiplex for once, too: the Duke Of Yorks in Brighton is a proper old repertory cinema and we were even in time to enjoy coffee outside on the balcony before the film. It wasn't too full at first, but started late (perhaps one of the downsides of a non-chain cinema) and lots of people came in after 11 am, so it was probably about 60% - 70% full eventually.
