IT Help, Please

I have Windows 7 and it keeps disconnecting from the internet, the same happens with the windows firewall that I have to re-connect every so often. Any help please?

To be blunt, get a different firewall. Any is better than windows own.

Agree with our steve.

Download Zonealarm (free) or b*y Zonealarm security suite.
Turn off windows 7 firewall.
Install Zonealarm as your default firewall.

Firewall is not the most likely culprit to your issue although it might well be a contributer. But its not the first place to troubleshoot.

If your are using wireless, Windows 7 default drivers are widely known to be problematic with some adaptors resulting in dropped connections such as what you are experiencing. You need to install the Wireless adaptor Manufacturer's own drivers.

If that hasnt resolved your issue then you next need to determine whether the connection drop occurs on your PC network/wireless adaptor or the internet is dropping at the router. Quick check is, can another PC get on to the internet? If you have no other laptop/pc in the house them ping the router when the internet drops to see if you still have connection to it. Next log onto the router to see if the internet access is available. If you have no idea what I am talking about then let me have your router brand and model, I can give you some instructions to check its connectivity log.


If you have connection to the router and internet appears to be accessible from it, next step will be to determine if your PC is ridden with Malware (probably most likely culprit, from experience).

Boot your pc into Safe Mode (ie restart your pc, tap the F8 key several times as soon as it starts to boot up) and select Start in Safe Mode with Networking. Scan your PC with Stinger first. Repeat scan until no viruses found. Do samething agaion with the Spybot. Repeat until no malware found. And same again with Malwarebytes.

DO the above first then we take it to next phase if neccessary :)

Lets know more about your setup, to help us narrow down the troubleshooting.

oh man, i got another one of those live viruses- this time called antivurus soft and boy this one is a real b%^*h

I can't seem to remove it no matter what I try. Tried to boot it in safe mode but it still appears to work when I use the networking option, infact I had to do a forced shut down as it wouldn't shut down, even in safe mode. Used malware whatever its called that comes up as a solution in google (the one I used last time) but its not bloody updating so I have an old copy of it. Whatever this trojan is, it manages to replicate itself many times after I restart it.

I can't even get in to my files quick enough to do the manual procedure plus to be honest I'd rather avoid that as I'm not too confident I'd be deleting the correct files.

A quick q:

Would a system restore send it back to the days where there was no virus? I saw some people said it works, others don't.

I dont have a copy of the files on my hard drive so really want to avoid doing a complete re-install at all costs......

It should do. The same virus attacked my comp. last week, and as you say I wasn't able to get to the files quick enough to do a manual procedure, but I did a system restore in safe mode, and that seems to have removed it.

I downloaded all my TV shows on Friday night, a system restore will get rid of it
