English, innit?
Re: English, innit?
My dad would be tutting now if he read your post Kay, he would never let us use the words get/got whilst growing up. I do use them now, but not as often as most people. He felt that they were lazy words that were used when perfectly adequate alternatives should be used, either that or they were used superfluously in a sentence.
Any use of "I've got some..." would be corrected to "I have some...", asking "Can I get...?" would be sternly corrected to "Please may I have...?" or other variations on a theme. He also refused to do something unless you asked him properly; "Can you do this?" would be answered positively but without any action taken on his part, whereas, "Will you do this?" would result in him actually doing something, maybe, if you were lucky and he didn't forget whilst being a splendid workaholic.

Not being English (and having had a father who insisted on accurate use of language, too) I am always glad to learn from the natives.
So, what would your father have said? Growing old? It doesn't feel the same as getting old, though.
In a way growing old describes more of the process of gaining e.g. wisdom
whereas getting old the process of losing abilities one had when one was younger ...

Re: English, innit?
My dad would suggest, growing old, becoming old or ageing but not getting old.
Re: English, innit?
Thank you! I will try to be more aware of it ...
So he would never use get in any context?

Re: English, innit?
If he ever does when I'm in ear shot I give him an earful, after all he's the one who drilled into me that you should never use it. Generally though he doesn't use get/got so I don't have the opportunity to tell him off about it that often

Re: English, innit?
English is not my native language and I've only been here for a year and a half but it still bugs me when people say things like:
Me and someone did whatever when the grammatically correct sentence is Someone and I...
When people cant say three and instead say free.
And I hate lol which has now spread globally.
That's my modest contribution

Re: English, innit?
Some people use LOL for lots of love at the end of a text message.
How can I tell when they are laughing at me and when they love me?

I've never heard people say free instead of three unless its an accent difficulty and usually I find that sort of thing charming. My Caribbean mother says tree instead of three. one, two, TREE!

You should have asked him if he was certain that it would definitely probably be fixed
