I think they would count that as Self Employed Income
It depends on what evilzadi's mum is actually doing, but she possibly just has 'rental income' rather than a 'trade'.

Don't you just love UK tax law!

Re Self-Assessment online: you don't have to be self-employed as I'm not and I complete my assessments online, but as Diane65 says, you do have to complete several stages before you can get that far. Agree that once you are good to go, it can be very quick, provided (again, as Diane65 says) that you have assembled all the info you need, so even if you have to wait for HMRC to post you the activation code, you may be able to use the time to collate paperwork if you haven't already done so. I've also found both the online and telephone helpline useful. Once you are on the system that's it; in future years you can go straight back in and begin the form-filling immediately.

Diane65, you talk nothing but good sense! And I could talk for England, so feel free to fire away. Though I have been too busy to spend much time here so far today, which has turned out to be a more manic Monday than I expected. However, now that my cake is cooling, I am looking forward to sitting down to enjoy a slice with some tea. The rest of the chores can wait.

Have to spend all day on a training course, which I really thought would be cancelled, given the distances some people have to travel and the methods they have to use. But no, so far it's going ahead, so it's time to do battle with public transport and ice.

I've just booked a trip of a lifetime!

82 days in the USA. Most of it staying with a friend in San Francisco (hard life huh!) but also going off on my own across the country for just under 3 weeks. I'm very lucky to have such great friends. Hardly a hotel the entire visit!

So excited! I'm going to lots of gigs as well as do as much sight seeing as I possibly can.

One friend near Chicago is also having a Breaking Dawn2 dvd release party when I'm at her house so I can make more friends who love Twilight/Robert P. How nice :D
