ummm I don't think so, I got my ticket, it's much further back than normal. I think Kevin Spacey just prefers to pack his theatre full for his artists rather than just thinking about profit margins. Going to watch it now, will report back later...

lolo i think i've seen most of this years big Old Vic productions for free. some of them have been so shit that i seen better at my uni (Tempest and Degrees of Seperation spring to mind) although there are quality shows there too all the time, dont get me wrong - and i'm really grateful.
When i'm being critical, i generally mean some of the minimalist shows, with pretty much no work done to spruce up the background, are the ones i mean as crummy - i mean, a major production company - you expect the effort to do at least that when school plays put in more. i'm, not sure if its their intent todo that, but it really does look lazy - i'd hate to have pa*d £20 for the dire effort that was 6 Degrees of Separation (but I am taking nothing away from the efforts of the actors, many of their performances exceeded the show's overall quality).

but the tickets keep coming, and theirs quality enough to make me keep picking them em heehee (with some help from fmuk forum users too ty!).
fav 5 films of the year - Tenet, Bill n Ted 3, Invisible Man, JoJo Rabbit, ?

Design for Living

#124 Post by superhero » Sat Sep 04, 2010 12:18 am

Well it was the first night of the previews for Design for Living and it was a rather enjoyable evening. This play was banned in the UK initially and it's the first time it's been revived in London in the last 15 years. I can see why it was banned back all those years ago, it is a very left wing, liberal play, but these days on TV, in the cinema I guess anything goes (almost)
It is quite a long play (3hrs 10mins), but you do get 2 intervals which nicely divides up the 3 Acts, Paris, London and New York.
Maybe I was tired, the first act is extremely "talky" and it picks up considerably when the play reaches London and then New York. There were lots of production staff around tonight, including the director, assistant director, Kevin Spacey. The acting from the 3 leads were very solid, although Andrew Scott had a tendency to overact. Lisa Dillon is in their next play too, A Flea in her Ear. Act 2 and 3 had quite alot of laughs, so be patient with Act 1.
Noel Coward has lots of great quotable lines in this play, but the problem is it gets all very "talky", when you can use 1 line to say something, he uses 5 lines. It's abit like seeing a Sondheim musical, you can't help appreciate the talent but people just don't interact like that.
Actually there's so many good lines, it's one of those rare plays I probably need to watch it again and explore the various subtext. Have a look in the foyer as well, there's some information about their rehearsal process.
Absolute top marks for their set. I have mentioned before sometimes I get disappointed going to plays and they make no/little efforts with the set. There's 3 different sets for this play and the final set for New York was particularly stunning, the other 2 were very picturesque as well. In the interval, they also let you see some of the staff change their sets too, which is interesting.
7.5/10

umm... can we not have a separate thread for theatre reviews like for film reviews especially for ones with SFF where they will probably keep giving codes away over the next few weeks. It's going to be confusing having it all lumped into one thread?

Yeah it's just there are so many theatre plays out there, if we opened a thread for each one it would clutter up the board, and that's why we opened this thread. And as you say, it's a film site first and foremost. We can't have one thread for the theatre codes then discuss each play separately.

Also, there would probably be only a hand full of people reviewing any given play, so it's an overkill to have a separate thread for each play.

superhero, thanks for the review. Sounds like you had a good time.

raj101, I really liked the 6 Degrees of Separation set.

There's not that many plays! but something like Bon Jovi, Rod Stewart and plays where quite a few free tickets will be giving out, I still think merits another thread, imagine having all those Bon Jovi posts stuck on here mixed up with posts about 6 degrees of separation? It's not great, but as I mentioned at the end of the day, we're a film site.

Also I looked recently, there's actually not that many FMUKers that interested in free theatre relative to free films (which is a shame)
