looking at them when they are talking to you (if face to face) - ie letting them know they have your full attention.
interpersonal skills and communications skills are very important in a customer service role. there are far too many people who have neither of these who manage to get these jobs. i don't understand how or why, but there just is.

Have good communication skills both verbal & listening, to be able to remain calm under pressure and have a good knowledge of the products and services available.

Ah don't give up. My daughter had the same problem she was about to give up but now has an interview on Friday. She recently went out for another b*ght of job hunting and the vibe was completely different compared to the beginning of the summer. Lots of places said they were looking to recruit in September and a lot of the shops are starting to recruit for the Christmas tempts. So go for it.
