I'm looking for a decent but not crazy expensive hotel in Paris - any recommendations? There are of course millions but it's a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack!

Anyone been to the Isle of Wight? Was planning to go the week after Easter, left it hilariously late with finding a nice B&B, most are hotels anyway. Have found a few nice-looking places, some in Ventnor, some in Shanklin. Was told to go for Ventnor if I valued peace and quiet, but is it that touristy yet just after Easter? Where would you go?

I feel as though I've been there so often that I need to give it a rest, but that's partly because I'm a keen walker and have just about exhausted the paths there now.

I wouldn't be able to advise anyone else where to stay as their priorities would be different; mine are easy access to good walking but also transport and other facilities, but in general I find the southern coast a bit boring and samey and I've often stayed inland because the sea is never far away.

Newport is best for shopping and has a Cineworld multiplex but has never featured in a preview list, so far as I know. The arts centre there also shows films and there is another, smaller, cinema in Ryde. Newport also has the weekly farmers' market which is a must for me, and it's handy for Carisbrooke Castle - definitely worth a visit.

Cowes is also fun for shopping, provided you like lots of little boutiques and also has a good, long promenade, as does Ryde. Yarmouth, on the north-west side, is a quiet and attractive small port, so I like it, but it has fewer facilities than any of the above.

The botanical gardens at Ventnor are also worth visiting but personally I would not stay there nor in Sandown or Shanklin, but there's nothing wrong with any of those places - it just depends what you want.

There are certainly loads of really interesting places to visit all over the island and if you are prepared to walk, take the bus or have the use of a bike or car, you can cover the whole island, regardless of where you stay. There's the garlic farm, a pottery (both with good tea rooms!), Mottistone Manor, the steam railway - the list is endless.

Thanks, I don't care about shopping, I want to see nature and castles etc. I know the island is easy to get round and I have it mapped out where we want to go, I just want to stay somewhere quiet. Have made a shortlist of 2 places in Shanklin, one in Ventnor and one in Newchurch, but sea views would be nice.
MooMoo, I am going the week after Easter.

LOL, I just called a B&B and he asked me whether he could ring me back as he was just bringing his chickens to bed. Hadn't quite appreciated how rural it is! :giggle:

At least it means super fresh eggs for breakfast! Have booked two different B&B's now so OH gets his seaview and I get my quiet.
