Good god. Am watching Come Dine with Me. First guy's main:

1. Pan fry chicken in butter, boil broc. Layer in oven dish.
2. In a bowl, mix two cans of chicken soup, a cup of mayo, 2 tbsp curry powder and a squeeze of lemon.
3. Pour mixture over the chicken, sprinkle with cheese and crushed ready salted crisps.
4. Presumably oven this for a while.
5. Serve with rice.

How awful does that sound????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well as an American I probably shouldn't say this but I fear that could be an American recipe because I have seen recipes using cans of soup (sometimes cream of chicken or cream of mushroom but always canned), mayonnaise and salted potato chips in US cookbooks. It sounds absolutely revolting.

It's the whole combination that sounds foul, I am not against adding soup as a rule.

When my nan cooks beef in the slow cooker she adds, onion, leek, swede, carrot 1 can of oxtail soup and 1 equivalent measure of water and I must admit it's pretty damn good.

To me it's the chicken plus chicken plus chicken that sounds wrong. And it looked ghastly.

So he called it Chicken Divan, but this is actually made with mornay sauce (a bechamel with cheese) according to a quick search. Apparently it was indeed invented in New York and remains popular in the States. Some people use mushroom soup instead of mornay.

I think it sounds ok in its original form.

I'm looking for simple tried & tested vegetarian recipes I can make with my daughter, nothing too fancy or spicy as she's only 8.

Any suggestions would be most welcome, thanks!

Homemade pizzas (easy ones that don't use yeast so quick too) might be a good choice. Here's a recipe that I listed earlier on the Food Thread but hopefully worth a repeat.

Makes 2 small 8 inch pizzas--double recipe if you want four pizzas but use a bit less milk.

12 oz tomatoes
8 oz plain flour
1/4 pint milk
4 tbs olive oil
1 tsp baking powder
6 oz cheese (cheddar is fine)
black olives
1 tsp marjoram or oregano (dried is fine)
salt and pepper

Oil baking tins. Stir flour, milk, oil and baking powder and season with salt and pepper. Work this with your fingers into a smooth, springy dough, divide into two portions and spread it out evenly in the tins. Grate or slice cheese and put on top. Then put sliced tomatoes and olives over cheese and sprinkle with herbs.

Cook in hot oven (220 C) for about 25 minutes (a bit less if you're using a fan oven). Presto, pizza!
Not fancy but very tasty and better than anything you b*y in a box -- or at least we think so.

I often throw a pasta sauce together which is basically cooking down onions, garlic, mushrooms, peppers (and whatever other veg you like) in some oil, then adding a tin of chopped tomatoes, oregano and seasoning, simmering for a while (depends on how much you make) then adding cooked pasta, and voila! Might be good because there can be lots of chopping involved if you want there to be, but easy to make.

I also use this as a base to make lasagne layering this with pasta sheets and bechamel.

Sorry I tend to throw things in and make by taste so don't have measurements, but I don't think one can go too wrong...
