As it was a sunny day I decided to get on with my painting. Wow what a difference it makes I did 2 coats on my table but needed 3 on my bench as the wood was drying out in the sun. I cannot recommend Cuprinol Shades enough I did both with a 2.5litre tin for the bargain price of £12.50 it was 2 for £25.00 so my friend and I b*ght them together.
Every bone in my body aches as I get in difficult positions to paint underneath so that I don't have to wait for it to dry before doing the top (don't do this unless you are quite bendy ;)). A nice hot bath seems to have done the trick.
I wish I knew how to upload photos to show the before and after.

What has everyone else been up to in the garden?

Well done to you Diane -- you seemed to have combined a flexible exercise routine with your gardening chores! I was following son in his half marathon today (we all take up duties at various points to cheer him on) and when walking back after seeing him at 5 mile and then at 8 mile points , I came across a Sunday farmer's market in the school where son works and b*ght a new thyme plant. Ours had called it a day after quite a few years and was being trampled by an overzealous sage plant which has completely taken over. I also passed our local Garden Club's plant sale and b*ght two rockery plants (name still unknown but I'll find out as I know the lady who donated the plants). So I have a few things to get started on. I have got a beautiful aquilegia in bloom which I b*ght last year (from the no hope area of Homebase where they sell half dead stuff off cheap). Can't tell you the pleasure it gives me to revive plants b*ght in the bargain area. Much more satisfying than b*ying something special and then wondering why it didn't thrive!

Got some free compost from a local public garden that was having a 'free compost day'. Stuff stinks!

Dahlias: can I grow these indoors as an indoor plant or do they have to be outside? I had a yellow one last year that was eaten by slugs. This year, I've b*ght a pink one and a striking darker pink one, I'd be miffed if the slugs ate these beauties!

Can anyone recommend a hardy fragrant white Rose for a border 5 foot by 1 foot. I'm guessing that I will need about 3 of them. I love the traditional roses but driving myself around the twist looking for 1. How is everyone else getting on? I need to get some herbs in my trug too as been busy decorating and doing my decking neglected this a bit.

I've just handed in my notice to the letting agent managing the property I'm renting. Looking forward to having a garden to pot around in - . Not really possible in a block of flats with a communal garden.

You are very welcome alythonian, I hope you got the plants that you wanted. o/

I went back to Aldi to b*y some compost for my new plants, and found that my local store was clearing out a lot of their gardening equipment at 50% discount, to make way for new stock.

It's not bad quality stuff (obviously nowhere near as good as Stihl branded or other really good professional kit), but even for the original price they are unbeatable value for money in my view. My gardening equipment gets a pretty hard life, so it's really great to know that this stuff is fully parts and labour guaranteed for 3 years! At 50% discount, it would be stupid and bordering on rudeness  not to b*y some.

I got the following:

Image

Electric Pole Pruner was £59.99 reduced price £29.99

Image

Electric Hedge Pole Trimmer was £59.99 reduced price £29.99

Image

Electric Hedge Trimmer was £29.99 reduced price £14.99

Pack of two bypass and straight pruners was £4.99 reduced price £2.49

I've linked a couple of pics showing my new purchases, so you get an idea of what they are like. Just need to put them to use now! ;)

Its worth remembering that ALDI discounts are individual to each store, and it is the local shop manager who decides when, if and how much to discount his end-of-line goods by. It may well be that they are not reduced yet at your store, or maybe they are sold out. Don't be shy. Try talking to the manager to get the price down as far as possible. They are always keen to shift old stuff so they have room to get the new stock in. 50% off is the best I've ever seen their stuff go for, so start somewhere around that mark. ;)

I think Aldi have some very good gardening equipment.
I've b*ght loads.
Just finished cutting my hedge with a cutter I b*ght there 5 years ago.
I also b*y loads of plants from them and they always do well.
