Re: The Book thread
Just finished Treasure island and really enjoyed it. A lot more brutal than I expected out of something which spawned a respective Muppets movie, lol.

Re: The Book thread
I am mostly racking up library fines, as usual, but trying to read the Great Gatsby. I say trying because I'm struggling to get into it, weirdly I always thought it would be one of those books I'd love - will persist though.
I'd recommend the one before though, Sabra Zoo by Mischa Hiller. It's set in Beirut in the 80's and the backdrop is the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, during quite an escalation, ending in massacre. Though the main story is actually about a young guy who stays to help translate in the local hospital and how he and his friends deal with what's happening. The group involves volunteers from a few countries including Scotland and Norway, so there's a mix of different perspectives on what is going on, but mostly they're all human beings and deal with it as such. Some of it's quite grim as things escalate, but it was pretty engrossing and actually fairly easy to read - the characters carry it. Worth a try if it sounds like your cup of tea, or if you fancy a random recommendation.

MrG are you looking for Supernatural fantasy, horror, teen romance or what? There's tonnes of stuff out there. I've currently just started reading Kate Mosse Winter Ghosts and it's good enough that when I pick it up most of the time I don't want to stop reading when I have to go back to work.
I recently read all the books by Jim Butcher, the series about Harry Dresden are a little bit on the pulpy side but enjoyable nonetheless if you're looking for a slightly more mature wizard - Sky showed a TV series based on them called "The Dresden Files". His Codex Alera series is slightly more sci-fi but still with magic involved and was also a good read.
Also if you want a detective story with some magic realism thrown in you can't fault Ben Aaronovitch's "Rivers of London" which I read incredibly quickly once I finally reached it in my to read pile.

Just finished Philip K. Dick's "Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?" An infectiously enjoyable sci-fi novel. The film, "Blade Runner", differs in quite a few ways. It's really up to opinion which is better. Personally I prefer the film, albeit only the "Final Cut".

I loved the first one, but its a big book so yeah took me a while to get through. The second (played with fire) I found really hard to get into, but once it took a hold I couldnt put it down. The third was equally as good!aruif wrote:i'm still reading the same book i was when i joined this forum! i've been reading it for amost 3 months now! I havent seen the films yet, but from friends I've heard they are very good. Am glad they kept them as foreign language, but will be intrigued to see how they adapt it for the US version with Daniel Craig.
