Coogan steps up well here in a very sad comfortably paced story that's formulaic but insightful enough to keep it gently lively but thoroughly watchable to the end.

9/10
fav 5 films of the year - Tenet, Bill n Ted 3, Invisible Man, JoJo Rabbit, ?

Disappointed by lack of analysis of social classes, wasn't the ultimate message that the underclass should be happy with their simple lives as access to the better things in life will only turn you in to a hateful person?

Watched this Glasgow this evening. Dame Judi Dench was superb as the older Irish woman who wanted to find her son. Steve Coogan was also very good in his role . . . and I'm not really a fan of his! Sadly this story is all too true and could be the story of so many women. It is certainly one of the saddest and most shameful parts of church history in the 20th century. I did feel so much for Philomena and wanted it to be " . .... and they all lived happily ever after".
I would highly recommend this film.

Did wonder whether Brenda Fricker could have played this role? The real photo of Philomena Lee at the end looked a bit like her and she sounded like her too.

She probably could have but having the reddish blonde hair made the young Philomena stand out in group scenes.

Great film with an outstanding performance from Judi Dench. Wondered why it never mentions the fact that she had got married and had a daughter and perhaps even more children.

More humour in it than expected. 8/10
Her daughter was mentioned, we saw her.

I always find it ironic that the nuns are the "Sisters of Mercy". yeah right. I certainly don't forgive them for what they have done to young girls/women throughout history.

Obviously a well known story but told from a thought provoking perspective and beautifully acted by Judi Dench and Steve Coogan.

Yes, that is what I am saying - she had a daughter. Perhaps she had even more children but nothing was said about that part of Philomena's life.
I know the story was about her looking for her lost son but if we had not seen she had a daughter we would have surmised that she spent the 50 years trying to find her son and never had any other sexual relationship as she referred all the time to the sex on that occassion and how handsome he had been. Not a mention of how she had a daughter and who had fathered her.

They don't show how she had a daughter and who the father was because it doesn't have anything to do with the story they're telling. It'd be a distraction.
