I forgot to say, we got two trailers, one for Basterds and one for a film about tough guys who difuse bombs, can't remember the title. Did anyone else get these?

we didn't get any trailers but I've seen the one about diffusng bombs before...can't remember the name either! - edit: that's why I keep forgetting it, a strange name!

the cinema was about 25 -30% full which isn't too bad considering I go to the same cinema on friday nights and for some foreign films we're lucky if there are 10 of us in a screening.

I thought the film was pretty good, I thought there was something interesting that it turned out the young kid seemed to have something inherently bad in him whereas the older guy was in a way trying to get out of it (although at the same time it was his fault for introducing the young one to it).I was surprised at it being rated a 15 too.

I also noticed Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal on the credits as exec producers, they seem to be involved in a lot of mexican films these days.

8.5/10

Saw this at The Screen on the Green Islington - Love this little cinema :D

I agree with AYBG, to a point, that the girls story was a little contrived at times and yeh there are parallels with City of God and many films would look weak against such mighty opposition BUT this was visually stunning and pretty well acted.

I though Edgar Flores as Willy/ El Casper did a particularly good job

I think I'll give it 8/10

My day got better as after the film we had a HUGE lunch at Pasha in Upper Street and with Taste of London Card got 50% off of the bill o/ o/ o/

No trailers in Brighton, but then the late start would have been even later if there had been. Wonder why some screenings get them and others not? Not that I would have wanted to see a certain trailer (can't be bothered to mis-spell film's name again) yet another time! OH commented on the turnout being good for a subtitled film and others have mentioned subtitles, too. Perhaps I am being naive, but what difference does it make? I honestly don't give a thought to whether there are subtitles or dialogue, as long as I can understand one way or another. Do some people really think "Oh, subtitles, I'l give that a miss"?

Yes, they do. Bizarrely. The same people who'd watch films in fullscreen because they hate the "giant black bars"....

I agree with Ms_Thrifty - never thought of anything either with subtitles! Never realised what the big fuss was!!!! As long as I can hear sound out of the person's mouth and the subtitles relect the screen then that's all that matters to me (oh and if the film is interesting! :P ).

This is also the first I've heard of the giant black bars! Hardly ever notice them!!!

It's not that bizarre that some people don't like subtitles. Here are a few examples -

I have a daughter who is dyslexic, I would not dream of taking her to a film with subtitles as she just could not manage it.
My OH is disabled with a neurological condition and whilst he can just about manage subtitles at the moment, he finds it all goes too fast for him as it takes more time to process the information as his condition progresses. At some time in the future I will have to stop taking him to subtitled films.

Where I live in east London I have encountered people who cannot read and write at all , for whatever reason and there are many young people around here who would struggle to keep up, dyslexic or not.

People with failing eyesight might also wish to avoid subtitles, as would those for whom english is a second language and who have a better command of spoken english than written.

I count myself as one of the lucky ones, for whom subtitles are no problem.

I didn't realise subtitles bothered people so much until I saw people walk out of free screenings as soon as they realise it's subtitled. I can understand if you can't read very fast but for anyone else I find you forget you're even reading them. I especially like french and spanish ones as it helps to keep up with the language. Although in Sin Nombre I did end up noticing where they're saying something different on screen than in the subtitles, and therefore a bit distracting. The main one I remebered was when the girl said she went to see a witch, but on the subtitles they'd put psychic, just little word changes and shortening of phrasing for the subtitles.
