Watched this tonight at Covent Garden. All I can say is...WOW! What a movie! I haven't read the book so I can't comment on how well it compares to the source material, but as a standalone feature, I was completely & utterly blown-away. Sensitively portrayed, funny, heartbreaking and in some parts just downright painful. I love Emma Stone to absolute bits (she's got that smart, sassy personality that you can just tell stems from her own inner-self), but in this case it was her co-stars who stole the show - Viola Davis, and to a MUCH greater extent, Octavia Spencer. Please someone give this lady an Oscar right now!!!

Overall, I loved it. If I do have any criticisms, it's that it took a pretty long time to set up the premise. I was exhausted going into the movie and during the first half hour found myself, as well as the South African lady sitting next to me, yawning to no end. By the end however, I was thoroughly moved and the Saffa lady fully drenched in her own snot & trane (tears).

I should however mention one very minor annoyance - the lady on my other side kinda ruined the last 5 minutes of the movie for me by bursting out into raucous laughter every time the pudgy child with the even pudgier cheeks appeared. Ugggh!! So much for a touching catharsis. Other than that, a most excellent flick, Ted. I'd recommend it to everyone I know in a heartbeat. o/

By the time they had established that they couldn't sort out the problem the only film that hadn't started yet was "The Debt" and as I had just pa*d a rush-hour-premium-tube-fare and didn't want to go back home without having seen a film - even with a voucher in my pocket - we watched that, and didn't regret it.

Glad your journey wasnt wasted. How long did they take to let you know that you wont be watching the help?

Oh thats not too bad if they were planning to start at half six, still the people who got there a lot earlier would be annoyed.

Nice to see an original film and not a remake or sequel. I liked Sissy Spacek as the slightly forgetful mum. Good film well worth seeing.

Saw this in WImbledon last night. It’s a long time since I have enjoyed a film so much. I loved everything about it – the casting, the costumes, the cars and the cinematography. Even at 2 hrs 20 mins it was too short - I simply didn’t want it to end. Emma Stone was very believable as Skeeter – as were Sissy Spacek and Viola Davis in their respective roles – but it is hard to pick out any flawed performance as the whole cast was perfect. 10/10

Saw this last night at Braehead. It was one of the films I really wanted to see having read and enjoyed the book. On very few occasions does the film version beat the book, and this is one of those rare occasions. The film stayed true to the book, added depth to the characters and the casting was wonderful, in particular Minnie, Abileen and Hilly, tho I have to say that there was not one actor who did not give a 100% performance. It did not seem too long, in fact the length of the film gave time to fully develop all the characters. There are not many films I would watch a second time round in the cinema, but I would watch this again. The other member of our book club also thoroughly enjoyed this film and praised it just as highly as I have done. Job well done. 10/10
