Some (including perhaps Beate?) may disagree, but the closest comparison I can think of in recent years is with The Lives Of Others. But good as it is, TTSS isn't quite as good in my opinion; TLOO was a real stand-out. Also, I did feel huge emotional engagement with the main character in the earlier film whereas with TTSS, as has been pointed out, you don't know the background or motivation of the characters which might be a drawback for some.

The Lives Of Others remains one of the best films I've ever seen.
The Life of Others, really?
I can't see how they compare, apart maybe the pace of the movie? But I am not sure as I haven't watched TLOO recently.

As you mentioned, in TLOO you do feel for the characters and it's quite easy to understand their motivations even if you don't know the historical context I think.

I did not hate TTSS, I just did not get it and the characters were so shallow that even them were not enough to make the film a brilliant cinematographic experience; I got it TLOO the first time around and the character were so touching that the tears were flowing away...

SH, I still think you should go in order to have your own opinion on it; the cast and picture are definitely worth it ;)

The Lives of Others is fantastic, one of the best films I've seen. It draws you in and it makes you care, and I burst into tears at the end. That is so far removed from my experience with TTSS that I don't even know where this comparison comes from. Honestly, not comparable at all.

Superhero: When you say go or don't go, do you have to p*y or not? If you have to p*y then well... Phuftt.

The four of us didn't like it, two of us fell asleep, but don't let that stop you.

Actually, I'm just stirring. Up to you if you go or not, if you don't go now, you can always wait for the dvd to come out.

I didn't see The Constant Gardener, what was that film like? As that was another one of his books.

BTW, I saw HP7 and wish I hadn't.

I got a few vouchers spare I can use. This was the film I was looking forward to most in the early Autumn period until I saw all the ZzzZZzz reviews

I too was disappointed with HP7. Part 2 was quite rushed in places and it felt flat in others.

Oh well then definitely watch it if it was the film you were most looking forward to seeing. If it helps, I can delete the 'zzzz' from my reviews.

Sunny Saver wrote:[DELETED a load of zzzs so superhero will go and see the film] [/b]sorry has the film finished?

Shame the Q&A wasn't at the end of the film; shame the audience couldn't ask the questions and instead the Art Editor from Telegraph did or else I would have asked 'in future if you are going to bore us sh*less for two hours, would it be possible to please ply us with free drink beforehand?'

It wasn't as bad as Kill List, but still.

Apologies to Funthing's mother and friend who were sitting behind us. I couldn't stop fidgeting because it's so cold and uncomfortable at the Mayfair Hotel, plus the pillar was slightly in the way and the heads of those in front blocked my view of the subtitles.

OH fidgeted as he tried to keep awake. [DELETED THAT OH FELL ASLEEP FOR SUPERHERO].

Found it a bit of a waste of all that talent.

Anyway, 5/10 Actually maybe just a four after I found out that my mother fell asleep more than once throughout the film.from us.

For superhero :). Now go see the film.

The things I do for you superhero! I hope you appreciate it.

Edit: Just went on the MSN landing page and saw ''Brilliantly plotted & superb acting' and it wasn't talking about I don't know how she does it.

That compares quite well to TTSS actually.

I liked The Constant Gardner but it is slow and heavy going like TTSS.

Both films unfold slowly with little action but suspenseful plot. They also both make use of flashbacks so you need to p*y attention to understand the character dynamics.
