I don't know what it is, whether I'm just stupid or very unobservant, but I'm very bad at spotting twists, even the most obvious ones. I'll have to watch it again.

I can't believe we now have to wait for 10 weeks untill the next part of it. Does anyone know why they done it this way? I wasn't going to watch it until it had finished then start it so it wouldn't be such a gap... but yes i couldn't wait once it had started. Now am kicking myself! I think most knew what the reveal was will be good to go back watch older episodes see the little hints they planted along the way and how many wasn't picked up at the time.

Moffat said the "mid-season finale" would be a "game-changing cliffhanger".

He added that next year's Doctor Who would run as two separate series, allowing him to double the number of "event episodes" in the new run, and meant fans would never be more than a few months away from the next instalment of the hit BBC1 show.

"Looking at the next series I thought what this show needs is a big event in the middle," Moffat told the Media Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival.

"I kept referring to a mid-season finale. So we are going to make it two series – seven episodes at Easter building to an earth-shattering climax, a cliffhanger we could never normally do because it would be too long before it came back. An enormous game-changing cliffhanger that will change everything.

"The wrong expression would be to say we are splitting it in two. We are making it two separate series.

"With an Easter series, an autumn series and a Christmas special, you are never going to be more than few months from the new series of Doctor Who.

"Tart that I am, we will now have two first nights and two finales, twice as many event episodes as we had before."

That is just a way to earn more from the DVD sales as now each 'series' will be sold separately.

Thanks canadian_turtle that does explain the reason. still not sure if i like it split.
Don't they normally release a DVD mid way then the full series later anyway? just longer to get the full thing

Yeah they do release DVDs before the full one, iirc they contain 2 episodes each. (and the Christmas special is usually on its own)

To confirm the rumours, this was posted to Twitter by Lizo Mzimba:

There will not be a full series of Dr Who in 2012! BBC confirms that BBC One Controller said this earlier today. #drwho

The BBC has, of course, commissioned 14 new episodes of Dr Who (hurrah) so looks like some will go in 2012 and remainder in 2013.

Well must say quite a lot of surprises in last night's episode. Thought I had gone off this despite being a Dr Who fan of more years than I care to remember. Not really impressed with Matt but he was actually not bad last night.

And as for Torchwood, well what can I say about that!! More than a few surprises there judging by all the protests to the beeb. But I enjoyed it. what does that say about me Okay not everyones cup of tea and a bit ott but there have been enough spoilers about this so folks should not have watched it.
