Lol I only had fun money because I spent extremely carefully! Ofcourse all the free movies helped a great deal ;) That would have been £100-200 gone with the amount of times i've been!
I have a limit of £40 to spend a week, and I limit myself to £10 on food shopping, Ive disciplined myself not to b*y clothes of stupid things I come across and say "wow!" cause I know ful well Ill use them once then never again!
I wait until the sales if I do b*y anything, and grab tons of shopping discount codes and eating out vouchers off Money SavingsExpert.com if I am going out anywhere, you'd be surprised how much of my £40 limit doesn't get used!

Well £1000 'fun money' might have been better spent saving up for the summer or next year's gas bills but I guess I'm old fashioned in that respect. You should consider yourself very lucky having an Easter holiday while at uni. I don't know many students who had that luxury!

And whilst it's great that you use FMUK for free films and MSE for other money saving deals, sometimes you just have to go without things if you can't afford them. Sad but true. If I had £1000 'fun money' it would go straight into p*ying some of son's tuition for next year.

over here its really the norm for a student to go on holidays, or else they wouldnt be at uni in the first place if you get me (parents are wealthy enough for them to do what they want, and we'd all choose some time out if we could when we are young, wouldnt we?). Nottingham Uni (not the city lool) is a bit of an upper class place (theres few working class here) so its like en masse here off to Australia/Europe... I'm often almost the only person on campus in the Easter lol whooole uni to myself. :p

the only thing that annoys me about thisis that the uni think they can charge whatever they want becos richer people dont complain about their prices. On campus halls are ridiculously overpriced. I know its the same at any posh uni like Oxford etc but it takes the piss here becos LOCAL people cant afford to study at their LOCAL uni...and thats what nottingham uni should be about...locals as well as students from afar.

Don't think any of my son's friends at Nottingham U were off to Australia/Europe over the Easter hols or maybe I am living on another planet. We certainly are not part of the posh brigade! Of course we'd all LIKE to got off on holiday but only if we can afford to.

Agree that halls are expensive but surely if you go to your local uni you could live at home and save a fortune. I know that's a sacrifice and living away from home is part of the university experience but with tuition fees being what they now are, more will have to choose this route. Friends of mine in London encouraged their children to go to uni in London with the proviso that they might have to live at home. Not ideal but necessary when money is tight.

Ditto!
Im just glad I started now before the prices go extortionate! Luckily im exempt from the price increase but anyone staring this year at Coventry has to foot the whole bill D:
My uni accomodation is £4085 atm :S thats for the whole year, self catered, with internet and tv included.

When I was at Uni we would have never been able to afford air fares anywhere but we just used to hitchhike somewhere in the Summer break - like Greece or Portugal - and sleep on the beach for a few weeks. The only thing we needed money for was food, which was a lot cheaper there than at home, and the odd ferry or bus or youth hostel during the journey. So we didn't really spent more than if we had stayed at home and had a great time and met some amazing people from all over the world who became friends for life! Occasionally we would work for a few days wherever we were e.g. helping with farming if we wanted any extra treat ... Thinking back to that makes me feel really old. Are there still people who do that "these days"?

hes not the norm here, believe me, but i do acknowledge the non-norm presence. I suspect the med school are the main culprits, them being the ones I see most. I went to a medicine course seminar that turned into a foxhunting reunion lool  !Certinaly medstudents really dont resemble people from the average background and theres definitely something odd with ther way they select medical students here.

Of course theres obviously students off campus that i dont meet, so i admit i dont see the whole picture. But it cant be denied that notts has become an oxbridge alternative for public schoolers.... if they cant get to oxbridge, its bristol nottingham, edinburgh ...or durham (unlucky, son).

I dont mean me. I said the locals here - this uni should be their local but it screws them over, since one of the biggest reasons in general to come to NOttingham Uni is to live on the campus.

damn that quotations gone doozy. Just to clarify, this post was replying to you, ejwrank. :star:
