Looks like I am in the minority as I thought there were a few occasions with quite clever use of 3D, such as when Jack is hiding underwater in the lake.

I went to see this again as I thought may have been too harsh with my score but I think 6.5/10 is right. It is silly fun but not a romping adventure among the likes of Pirates of the Caribbean which I think it imitates in some regards.

Ewan's hair was so distracting!
There were a few moments where the 3D was good, but that was my problem, quite often it was unnoticeable and I felt a couple of occasions where it didn't seem to work properly. As far as a free preview goes that's fine, but if I was p*ying for the extra cost of taking a family to see a film in 3D I don't think for few clever moments would justify it.

I did like Ewan's character, I think he shone more than the lead. I thought Stanley Tucci played Roderick very much like the Alan Rickman's, Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, in fact there were points during most of the film where it reminded me of other films which was quite distracting!
Preferred Cinema's now Paignton or Exeter!

I loved this film. Was surprised by actually liking Nicholas Hoult as I assumed him to be more like a zombie (like in warm Bodies, lol) but he was pretty good. Ewan stole the show though. Didn't notice his distracting hair (other than that it was pretty and suited him) but had a laugh over his accent. I enjoyed the action sequences but thought it was also quite scary and gruesome, not one for young children.

Echoing the comments regarding the 3D, unfortunately filmmakers are becoming quite lazy with it and only add it for depth and crispness and not use it for what (I think) it's intended for: make stuff pop out of the screen. Adding to the annoyance were the new, smaller 3D glasses at Odeon West End that never felt comfortable as they pressed my own glasses into my head.

The "fun in the foyer" was a bit lacking this time around, as there was little else but green screen, some film costumes on show and a climbing wall outside (in the pouring rain!). But at least we got popcorn in interesting flavours (mine was chili/lime), a bottle of water and cool branded bookmarks that have seeds in them and which say that you can plant them to grow your own sprouts, which I thought was pretty nifty.

Thanks to martadelas for saving us seats today!

8/10

I was thinking along the lines of Kenneth Brannagh too, only not quite. Lovejoy made a good king though. I did however spend the whole movie trying to spot James McAvoy - was he a soldier? a giant? until I finally realised he wasn't even in it at all!
LOL, I think you mean Mrs Beeton.

James McAvoy can't be in everything but he is in Welcome to the Punch and will be in next week's Trance.

I am glad I am not the only one who found the 3D utterly superfluous and even wrong for this film. It didn't peter out as such, it was there all the time but it wasn't used to make things stand out like having something float towards the viewer, it was just there to give the film depth and as such I think it failed.

Did anyone else think the last scene in the Tower was a bit, um, far-fetched?

When we got to the cinema, we had to queue outside the screening to get our tickets scanned. The screening wasn't massively packed, i'd say it was about 80% full. I thought overall it was a good film. I think the film looks better in the adverts than it actually is. I think I was expecting a bit more from the film. I wanted there to be a bigger fight at the end and was really disappointed that the giants never said 'I smell the blood of an English man' lol. But there was good action and the film was enjoyable. I think some of the kids in the cinema were a bit scared at some of the parts, so i don't think the film is suitable for kids under 12, especially with the swearing, but overall i'd give the film a 7.5/10.

Went to see this at Cheshire Oaks with my daughter today.

Good fun kids film with some excellent effects.

The 3D added nothing to the movie.

We both give it a 7.5/10 :D

Fantastic family entertainment. Good all round, thought the 3D worked best for the giants POV showing how tiny the villagers were.

My cousins who were with me, 11 and 16 , both loved it and are looking forward to a sequel.

Thanks again to akh43 for the tickets, and Steve for the +1 offer, and good to see FMUK North briefly before we dashed off to see the St Patricks Day parade in Manchester.

Saw this in a full Glasgow showcase. I loved it and even OH love it too. Like someone else mention it is a refreshing take on the fairy tale and I love how it ended. Yeah totally unbelievable with the tug o war but who cares. Never recognised Tucci. Probably cos he had hair but he did also reminded me of Rickman's Sheriff of Nottingham. And am I the only one who thought McGregor looked like Eddie Izzard in this?

Saw this at Glasgow this morning and enjoyed it much more than expected! Very pleasantly surprised. Thought 3D was excellent. Very much a far fetched tale but this added to the story. 8/10.

A full showcase in Cardiff. The little man sat on my lap after the first 20 mins and stayed there till the end of the film. He really enjoyed the chef and the fart jokes - trying to stop his digit doing a similar thing at the moment! First time there were no trips to the loos.
Loved the story, thought the 3D OK. Giants were quite scary even if they changed size from time to time. Liked the one liners, something for everyone this film.
