Re: The Great Gatsby
I absolutely love the book, and now have very mixed feelings about going to see the film. Should I bother with the 3D version, I wonder?

Absolutely loved it, true Lurhmann epic with all the flamboyance and tragedy of the book. Loved his very small cameo at the rooftop restaurant. The amount of Australian actors made me smile as I was spotting them, Barry Otto was nearly doing his shuffle from Strictly Ballroom. Leonardo was wonderful, Toby was a good choice for his role and the music worked a lot better than I thought it would. Wee tear in my eye at the end even though I knew what was going to happen.

Re: The Great Gatsby
Saw this on Monday with a group of ladies from church. Some loved, some didn't!
. . . I loved it!
I agree with moggers view of Leonardo . . . much better than expected given I'd read some criticisms. The film was indeed a spectacle of that era . . . the costumes and houses were fantastic!
The cinema was very quiet throughout which really helped come the final scenes.

Re: The Great Gatsby
While having read the book is not in all cases a prerequisite to disliking the film, I have to say that Baz Lurhmann's Gatsby did not impress me. Much of the film was loud, brash and stylistically distracting; the constant use of CGI was unnecessary and the modern soundtrack really took away from the subtlety of the original text. For example, take the depiction of Gatsby's introduction into the plot: Fitzgerald's description in the novel focuses on Gatsby's smile, a single facial gesture, and how this adds to his character - but Lurhmann overlays the same scene with abundant fireworks. All surface, no substance! There were a few redeeming factors, like DiCaprio's performance, but on the whole I didn't enjoy it as much as other people seem to have done.

Went to see this film with very low expectations but was pleasantly surprised. Great production, great acting and it captured the atmosphere of the book perfectly. Loved it and didn't bother with the 3D version. It's well worth seeing.

Re: The Great Gatsby
I actually pa*d to see this movie. Doesn't happen a lot, I'm glad to admit. Got it at a reduced rate, so still next to nothing. My coffee was just as expensive as the ticket - which would have been scary if I actually had to p*y in monetary value rather than p*ying via a gift card.
Well, I have always liked Baz Luhrman's directorial style/flair, but I wasn't drawn to watching The Great Gatsby, and so started reading it instead. I then had a spare few hours to fill on Monday, and so thought I'd go and see the movie, despite initial reservations. I didn't expect to like it. The Jay-Z and Kanye West lyrics put me off a bit (although I liked the theme tune music without them shouting over it), but the rest of the music was decent enough (especially Jack White's version of 'Love is Blindness').
I thought Joel Edgerton's and Elizabeth Debicki's characters were played the best. I'm not a DiCaprio fan at the best of the times, and felt that the leading roles were not strong enough. I didn't feel a spark of passion between them.
Saying that, I loved the sets and outfits, and the movie was interesting overall. While the book is a testament to great literature, the movie could have done it better justice. It's just unfortunate that I couldn't feel Gatsby's pain/shame/regrets through DiCaprio's eyes.

Re: The Great Gatsby
I have to agree on some level with you. Personally I felt like the movie could have gained and become more "delicate" (look for example at certain scenes in Tom Ford's "A Single Man" that might be beautifully 'quiet' yet revealing so many feelings just through facial expressions, colour changes and focus on small gesticulations) on some levels. Yet I was overwhelmed by how believable Leo's expression was in the scene was where it was stated that Gatsby looked as if he had killed a man! I think it's one of those moments in a movie that of some strange reason stays with you for a long time... :)weirdfilms33 wrote:For example, take the depiction of Gatsby's introduction into the plot: Fitzgerald's description in the novel focuses on Gatsby's smile, a single facial gesture, and how this adds to his character - but Lurhmann overlays the same scene with abundant fireworks.

I'm a big fan of the book and have been waiting to see this film ever since I heard Baz was working on the script. I have to say I found his interpretation a rather good one. Although I was really hoping Myrtle would sizzle a bit more on the screen as her character in the book is more dynamic and in my opinion more likeable. However Baz did a fantastic job and I enjoyed the film.
